The University has proudly launched its new Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Graduation Stole, celebrating the academic excellence, cultural identity, and pride of Indigenous graduates across Lutruwita.

Designed by Trawlwoolway Palawa artist Andrew Mansell, the artwork embodies the unification of cultural strengths, empowering graduates through traditional knowledge, connection to Country and the spirit of walking together.

The University's Pro Vice-Chancellor Indigenous Excellence, Professor Sadie Heckenberg, said the graduation stoles weave many stories together and honour the power of culture.

Andrew Mansell is a poet, storyteller, and cultural practitioner. "To me these stoles aren't simply something you wear, they are a reminder that knowledge is never the end of the journey. It's the beginning of responsibility," he said to students when launching the stoles at the Launceston graduation ceremony.

Special thanks to Nathan Pitchford for delivering the statement of Country, to Andrew Mansell for the artwork and kind words at the Launceston graduations, and to our students for wearing them with pride.

Applications are now open for the OHCHR Indigenous Fellowship Programme 2027!

The OHCHR Indigenous Fellowship Programme offers a unique opportunity to strengthen knowledge of the international human rights system through four weeks of training in Geneva.

The Programme brings together Indigenous representatives from around the world to:

🌍 Strengthen capacity on the United Nations human rights system and the rights of Indigenous Peoples.
🌐 Exchange experiences with Indigenous representatives from other regions.
📚 Strengthen advocacy skills and practical knowledge.
🌱 Build lasting connections and become part of a global alumni network.

Riawunna celebrated NAIDOC Week across our campuses with Morning Teas, cultural activities and songs, and attending the very special NAIDOC Flag Raising at Piyura Kitina.

Thank you for all who came along, our NAIDOC celebrations get bigger each year. A special thanks to Uncle Douggie Mansell who came in to share songs, Jo Kennedy, and Bianca Templar who facilitated some very successful cultural workshops.

The July Round of Ember Connect’s Game Changer Grants is now open.

There are 20 grants of up to $1,000 available for professional and personal enrichment projects for First Nations women aged between 18 and 25.

Talent exists everywhere - so we’re ensuring at least 40% of all grant funding from the July Round will go to regional and remote applicants.

What you need to know:

- Open to First Nations women
- Must be aged between 18 and 25 as of 1 July 2026
- Grants of up to $1,000 available
- Use the funding for any professional or personal enrichment activities
- At least 40% of all grant funding will go to regional and remote applicants

Applications close 11.59pm AWST Friday 31 July 2026.

The Riawunna Centre for Aboriginal Education is seeking to engage a Tasmanian Aboriginal community member, with knowledge and experience in weaving, to lead a series of weaving workshops at Riawunna. The workshops will bring people together to support the transfer of knowledge and create nine woven circles that will be inserted into the metal shelter in the Riawunna Cultural Garden. The successful applicant will work alongside Riawunna to develop a project plan to support people coming together to create the woven works. The project will be based at the Inveresk Campus, Launceston, outside the north-eastern entrance of the University of Tasmania’s River’s Edge building at Inveresk is a flourishing landscape embedded with traditional knowledges.
