Today, we were proud to welcome Associate Professor Anna Farmery (Class of 1992) back to Fahan to receive the prestigious 2026 Gerdy Jevtic Medal and deliver the annual Travers Morphett Lecture.

The Gerdy Jevtic Medal has, over the years, celebrated Fahan alumna who have broken new ground and led with distinction in their chosen fields. Anna’s contribution to international research and development, and her commitment to improving both human and planetary health, make her a very worthy recipient of this honour.

In her lecture, In Endeavour and in Fun: How Curiosity and Courage Built a Global Career, Anna shared the experiences that have shaped her work with communities around the world to improve food security, nutrition and sustainable livelihoods. She encouraged our students to remain curious, have the courage to step outside their comfort zones and be open to learning from others – reminding them that the path to success is rarely a straight line.

Later in the program, the Pride of Fahan Alumni Award was presented by the Fahan School Alumni Association to Year 10 student Islay Smith, recognising her achievements and commitment to sailing. The award will support Islay as she progresses from Cadets into the 29er class and takes the next step in her sailing career.

Congratulations to Anna and Islay on their outstanding achievements.

Today, our Junior School came together for Book Week, with students from Pre-Kinder to Year 6 embracing this year’s theme, Symphony of Stories.

Fittingly, the assembly began with a performance by our Junior Strings group, before Junior School Chair Ella, together with our Year 6 presenters, led us through a very entertaining Book Week Parade.

Every Junior School student took to the stage, bringing an incredible variety of books and characters to life through their costumes. There were dragons, fish, a sculpted egg and even a wardrobe, alongside characters drawn from classic tales, contemporary releases and much-loved favourites.
The magic of reading certainly came to life today.

Over the past week, we have been delighted to welcome Senior students from our sister school, Tokyo Jogakkan, to Fahan.

During their stay, the students experienced life at Fahan, joining classes and activities alongside our students, as well as exploring Hobart and some of Tasmania’s local attractions.

The exchange has provided many opportunities for our students to connect, share their cultures and build friendships, continuing the longstanding relationship between Fahan and Tokyo Jogakkan.

As our friends return to Japan today, we thank the Fahan families who welcomed students into their homes and helped make their time in Tasmania such a memorable experience. We wish our Tokyo Jogakkan students and staff a safe journey home.

It has been a busy Science Week, with students across the School exploring this year’s theme, Seeds of Science: Nurturing Knowledge for All, through demonstrations, challenges, excursions and visiting scientists.

Throughout the week, Senior students immersed themselves in science through a hovercraft demonstration, Science Escape Rooms, a giant Years 7–12 Kahoot testing general science knowledge, and Robot Design and ‘Guess the Number of Seeds’ competitions.

In the Junior School, Year 1 enjoyed making science experiments with the Year 11 and 12 students, Years 2 and 3 took part in a science excursion to Elizabeth College, while Year 4 attended the Festival of Bright Ideas. Years 5 and 6 welcomed the Tassie Young Scientists from the University of Tasmania, hearing about their work and research.

Year 12 representatives also attended the annual Science Week reception at Government House with Science Coordinator Ms Felicity Jacobs, meeting the Governor of Tasmania and learning from scientists across various fields about their work and career pathways.

A week of opportunities to explore, question, experiment and put science knowledge to the test.
