We still have a couple of external places available for our popular field unit Volcanology and Mineralisation in Volcanic Terrains.

This face-to-face field-based unit is run 4-18 March in New Zealand and western Tasmania, and provides an introduction to the processes and products of different eruption styles, contrasts in scale and structure of volcanoes, identification of key volcanic facies associations and interpretation of facies variations. Mineralisation and alteration processes related to hydrothermal systems in subaerial and submarine volcanic environments and implications for mineral exploration are included.

The CODES Ores in Magmatic Arcs- South America field-based unit is one of our most popular units, and is a great field-based training opportunity for geoscientists working in the exploration and mining industry. This unit forms part of our Master of Economic Geology program, but we also have a limited number of industry/professional places available for our stakeholders for professional development. David Cooke, Yamila Cajal Contreras and Victor Torres Pacheco will lead the trip, with invited presentations from Jose Piquer and José Tomás Ovalle.
Registrations are now open, with the trip running from October 11-25, 2025 with field locations in Chile and Peru. This training has a strong focus on field observations and hands-on practical skills, supported by an understanding of theoretical aspects.

CODES will be delivering its online Geodata Analytics unit August 4 - October 31. This unit is part of the Master of Economic Geology and Graduate Certificate in Economic Geology programs at the University of Tasmania, and will provide industry-based geoscientists with an understanding of the fundamental concepts of database handling and manipulation, statistical analyses, pattern recognition and machine learning for the processing, analysis and modelling of large volumes of multivariate geoscience data. The unit is led by Dr Matthew Cracknell, and is divided into three parts delivered online and in succession between August and October, with Part 2 (15-19 September) being an intensive week of "face-to-face" lectures and practicals.

** Delivery will be in English, and interactive sessions will occur between ~9AM - 5PM AEST (+10UTC) **

Registrations are now open for Fundamentals of Economic Geology (April 7-12 & May 5-9, 2025). This training, delivered online via Zoom, will teach the fundamental skills needed by all economic geologists in order to characterise, interpret, explore and mine ore deposits. Key fundamental geological concepts used to describe and interpret ore deposits will be covered, including ore and alteration mineralogy, paragenesis, ore and gangue textures, breccia textures, geochemistry and geophysical characteristics of ore-forming environments and supergene features. The unit focusses on identifying and using key tools to recognise the sequence of events that have impacted ore-forming environments, and how these tools can be best used in an exploration context to solve exploration, mineral processing and environmental problems.
