Sandringham College is proud to highlight Asha Hinton, class of 2014.
Asha is a primary school teacher and just this year has started boundary umpiring in the AFLW for the 2026 season. For Asha to get into the AFLW she has committed 17 years to Australian Rules football as an umpire. She did this along side her studies at Sandringham College, university and coaching gymnastics for 10 years.
Asha was our college Sport Captain which inspired her to keep getting involved in sport and physical movement. She was a regular participant in college athletics and interschool sport teams. Asha was proud to be part of our women’s AFL teams at the college but she’s glad that she stuck to umpiring.
If Asha could say anything to our students, she would say “to always be kind, believe in yourself and have the courage to stand up for what’s right. You never know where the opportunities you take at school might lead you, so don’t be afraid to try something new or step outside your comfort zone.” She wants to encourage girls in particular to believe that they belong in every sporting space. Women’s sport has come such a long way, but the next generation has such an important role to play in continuing that growth. As women in sport, they have an opportunity to show young girls that they can be athletes, umpires, coaches, leaders and anything else they want to be. If they can see it, they can believe it — and if they believe in themselves, they can achieve it. Most importantly, be someone who lifts others up, backs yourself and does the right thing, even when it isn’t always the easiest choice.
