THIS FATHER'S DAY, WE HONOUR THE MEN WHO HELP SHAPE STRONG FUTURES // Across Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities, fathers, grandfathers, uncles, brothers and Elders have long played a vital role in teaching culture, sharing knowledge and nurturing a strong sense of identity and belonging.
At Gilibaa, we recognise and celebrate the positive influence these male role models have in the lives of our students. Their guidance, encouragement and connection to culture help young people grow into confident, capable leaders of tomorrow.
Thank you for all that you do.

LEARNING BEYOND THE CLASSROOM // Recently, Gatambigan Grove and Gatambigan Naden attended the National First Nations Education Conference in Meeanjin (Brisbane), joining educators from across Australia committed to strengthening First Nations education.

Through inspiring presentations and practical workshops, they explored truth-telling, reconciliation, and ways to embed Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander perspectives across the curriculum.

We're excited to bring these valuable learnings and new resources back to Gilibaa, enriching teaching and learning for our students.

CELEBRATING NATIONAL ABORIGINAL AND TORRES STRAIT ISLANDER CHILDREN'S DAY // Earlier this month, Gilibaa celebrated National Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Children's Day and this year's theme, "Living Our Truth."

The day recognises the strength, pride and potential of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children, while celebrating the importance of truth-telling, storytelling and the sharing of knowledge across generations.

To mark the occasion, our Stage 2 students created Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander flags using biscuits and icing. Their creations were fantastic and made for a fun, hands-on way to celebrate culture and learning together.

CULTURAL CONNECTIONS // This week, we were delighted to welcome a group of Japanese exchange students to Gilibaa.

Students enjoyed spending time together, sharing language and culture, and learning from one another. They taught each other how to say "hello" in their respective languages, creating lots of smiles and meaningful connections along the way.

Our Gilibaa students also shared some traditional dances, giving our visitors a special insight into Aboriginal culture and the importance of storytelling, community and connection.

It was a wonderful opportunity to build new friendships, celebrate cultural diversity and learn from one another's experiences.

TRAD GAMES FUN // As part of our NAIDOC Week celebrations, students enjoyed learning and playing a range of traditional Indigenous games (TRAD Games).

They put their skills to the test with Thepan, a traditional rainforest sword-play game from North Queensland that emphasises strategy, coordination and respect, and Kai, a Torres Strait Islander ball game where players work together to keep the ball in the air through a series of volleys.

These activities provided a fun and engaging way to learn more about the history, culture and traditions of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. Through teamwork, skill and plenty of laughter, students gained a deeper appreciation for games that have been played and shared across generations.

It was fantastic to see everyone getting involved, having fun and celebrating culture while learning more about the rich history of our people.

NAIDOC WEEK ON COUNTRY // As part of our NAIDOC Week celebrations, we spent a wonderful day on Country, walking from Fly Point to Little Beach and taking time to connect with the natural environment around us.
Throughout the walk, students reflected on the importance of Country and deepened their understanding of the connection between land, culture and community. It was a valuable opportunity to learn, share and appreciate the beauty of the place we call home.
Of course, there was also plenty of fun along the way, with time to play at the beach and enjoy a delicious BBQ lunch together!
It was a fantastic day of connection, learning and celebration, creating memories that will stay with us long after NAIDOC Week.
