The Alice Springs Reptile Centre recently visited Nathalie Gorey Preschool and Transition. The children learned about some of the reptiles found in our local environment. They were excited to hold a bearded dragon and a blue-tongued lizard, as well as gently touch an olive python. What a memorable hands-on learning experience!

Dear Families,
As part of our ongoing learning about Australian animals, we will have the Alice Springs Reptile Centre visit our preschool to extend our understanding of the local reptiles that live in our environment.

Date: Monday 16 August
Time: 10:00 am
Location: Nathalie Gorey Preschool
During the visit, students will have the opportunity to learn about a range of local reptiles, and the important role they play in our ecosystem. This experience will support and enrich our current sequence of learning about Australian animals.
We are looking forward to an engaging and educational experience for all students.

Good news about our Alice Springs show cow we got Reserve Regional Champion, sad news is that the overnight rain on Friday night caused lots of damage to the cow and it had to be disposed of.

Good Morning Jo,
Firstly, I wanted to say a huge thank you for participating in this year's Cows for Schools competition at the Alice Springs Show. We were absolutely thrilled with the creativity, effort and enthusiasm shown by all of the schools, and the display was a real highlight of the show.
Congratulations! Your cow was awarded Reserve Regional Champion. This is a fantastic achievement, and we hope you and your students are incredibly proud of your hard work.
This year also saw an incredible response from the public. Interest in the People's Choice Award was so overwhelming that we completely ran out of voting slips by early Friday afternoon, something that has never happened before! It was wonderful to see so many people engaging with the competition, and thanks to this year's success we'll be increasing the number of voting slips available in 2027.
Unfortunately, after judging concluded on Friday afternoon, heavy rain fell overnight. As many of the cows are painted with water-based paints and are made from chipboard, several were significantly damaged by the weather before we arrived on Saturday morning. Sadly, the damage was extensive enough that the cows could not be salvaged and had to be disposed of.
We know how much time, creativity and pride students put into these projects, and we are genuinely sorry that this happened. While the judging had already been completed on Friday afternoon (to accommodate our judge, Kate Everett from Zoetis, who was unable to attend on Saturday), we understand it is disappointing that the cows could not remain on display for the remainder of the show and be returned as usual.
We will be discussing this with the Alice Springs Show Society ahead of next year's event to see whether part of the display can be packed away and stored undercover overnight if wet weather is forecast. We hope this will help prevent a similar situation in future.
We're pleased to let you know that this year's Champion Cow, created by Ross Park Primary School Class 5L, will still go on to represent Central Australia in the Territory-wide Champion of Champions judging at the Royal Darwin Show this weekend, with judging to take place from photographs taken before the rain.
Your ribbon is ready for your school. We'd be more than happy to either:
• post it to your school; or
• drop it in to you when we're next in Alice Springs in late August.

Today Nathalie Gorey Preschool went on their first Bush Preschool of the year to the Telegraph Station. This was an opportunity for children to learn on Arrernte country, explore and show care and respect for the local environment. The children went on a scavenger hunt and observed the creek noticing patterns and bubbles. Ina enjoyed collecting different rocks. Richard commented "break the rocks in half to see what inside like diamonds".
The children shared their knowledge with each other. Melani, Laisha and Meliame collected sticks and rock to build a campfire and Lyneia and Violette showed us how you can rub two rocks together to start a campfire while Braylen shared, "Dad can cook kangaroo on the campfire". Then Richard showed us how to dig for tyape (edible grub) and Kwatye (water). He drew symbols in the sand and had a yarn about what he was drawing.
The children had a fantastic time with lots of enriched valuable learning. The highlight of the day was spotting some rock wallabies on the hill. Esther said "we saw 3 and 5 rock wallabies - showing 8 on her hands!

On Monday of next week, we will be celebrating all the wonderful mothers, carers, grandmothers and significant females in the lives of our children with a Mother's Day breakfast.

This decision has been made out of respect for Kumanjayi Little Baby and the families at Sadadeen Primary School and Nathalie Gorey Preschool who are directly connected to her.
