Day 4 of Sydney Royal Fleece to Fashion is now a wrap. Another great day full of questions and interested public. Today we welcomed a new member to our merry band of workers. A very big welcome to Hanim and her georgous grandaughter Ummuhani aka "little packhorse". Hanim does the most beautiful Kilim Tapestry. Do you think she uses a pattern? No, she doesn't, the pattern materialises as she weaves, she tells me, the pattern emerges as she goes, her mood determines the pattern. If happy, then bright colours emerge, if sad, it is more subdued. At home in the villages in Turkey, young girls in love, will have flowers and birds emerge as they weave. It is such a pleasure to watch as her fingers fly across the warp. Her friend, Berra, who joined us last year, was as usual, a great hit, especially with the children. Berra makes at home, cardboard looms, she then teaches them how to weave and home they go with their little looms and a great desire to complete their work. We even had a teacher from Woolongong today learn how it is done and left with her sample loom and a new craft is about to appear in a Woolongong school. All this really makes the hard work and tiredness almost worthwhile.
