An evening of learning, reflection… and Banh Mi! 🥖🎶

This week, our team came together for a Professional Development evening exploring Disclosures and Lived Experience in Therapeutic Practice.

Led by our Registered Music Therapists Winnie Choy and Lucy Morgan, the session invited us to reflect on how our own experiences and identities can naturally shape the way we connect with clients and families — and to consider when sharing aspects of our lived experience may be helpful, and when professional boundaries need to come first.

It was a valuable opportunity to pause, reflect and have some thoughtful conversations about the complexity of bringing our whole selves into therapeutic practice.

And of course, no team evening is complete without food! We enjoyed some of the famous Banh Mi from Top Ryde Baker's House before getting started. 🥖

We were apparently far too eager to eat them because… we completely forgot to take a photo! 😂

A big thank you to Winnie and Lucy for leading such a thoughtful and engaging session — and to Top Ryde Baker's House for keeping our team well fed!

It’s been one week since we wrapped up a month of fundraising for Red Nose Australia, and we’re so grateful for the kindness and generosity shown along the way! ❤️

Together, we raised an incredible $2,056!

A huge thank you to everyone - your contributions helped Red Nose Australia continue their important work preventing the loss of babies and children, and supporting families when the unimaginable happens.

Thank you for being part of something so meaningful with us!

This week, we headed to Sydney’s Northern Beaches with The Benevolent Society to deliver our Sound Reset Workshop: Music for the Tough Days for carers.

And while we were there, we couldn’t resist taking a moment to soak up a little of that beautiful beachside atmosphere. 🌊

Carers play such an important role in supporting others — whether caring for a child, an ageing parent or a loved one who is unwell — often giving so much of themselves in the process.

Led by our Registered Music Therapist Lucy Morgan, the session explored meaningful and practical ways to use music to manage stress, regulate emotions and create moments of calm, even on the toughest days.

No projector? No problem! We went old-school with a whiteboard — complete with a little brain drawing to explore some of the ways music can influence the brain and support the release of neurotransmitters including dopamine, endorphins, oxytocin and serotonin. 🧠🎶

A big thank you to The Benevolent Society for inviting us to be part of this important work supporting carers in our community. 💙

Our team at Sound Expression will be baking up some sweet treats and sharing a little love in support of Red Nose Australia ❤️

Come by, grab something sweet, wear a little red (if you’d like!), and help us raise funds for a meaningful cause!

Funds raised help Red Nose Australia provide grief and loss support for families, fund lifesaving research, and deliver education programs that help keep babies and children safe.

If you can’t make it to the bake sale, you can still show your support by scanning the QR code to donate directly.

P.S. Yes, we take cookie boundaries very seriously around here 😂🍪

Look at Alice’s session set up! 🎶✨

A music therapy session can start long before the music begins — with a carefully considered environment designed to invite movement, play, connection and choice.

This was the set-up waiting for one of our young clients: drums, colourful rhythm instruments, movement props and a few friendly musical companions.

Every element has a purpose, but there’s also plenty of room for the child to lead, explore and discover - creating a space where a child feels safe, curious and ready to engage. 💛

Music that meets people where they are. 🎶

This session with RMT Lucy Morgan shows how music therapy can bring together different ways of participating - from playing piano and percussion, to moving with pom-poms, singing, or simply being part of the group. Participants, therapist and support workers - all joining in creating a genuinely shared musical experience.

A music therapist’s skill isn’t just in choosing songs that are “age appropriate”. It’s in selecting and adapting music to suit the people in the room — their abilities, preferences, energy, communication styles and therapeutic goals — so that everyone has a meaningful way to engage.

Different ways of participating. Everyone contributing. One shared musical experience. 💛

One of the greatest privileges of being a music therapist for many years is witnessing the long journeys of the children and families we have had the honour of supporting.

More than a decade ago (!), Rob and I worked with a young child and his family during the early intervention years. When our time together came to an end as he started Kindergarten, we often wondered what the years ahead would bring.

This week, his mum reached out unexpectedly to share an update — and we were so touched to hear that he is now finishing Year 12 and doing incredibly well.

These moments are a beautiful reminder that we are often only one small part of a much bigger story. We walk alongside children and families during a particular chapter, supporting connection, confidence, communication and growth — and then we have the privilege of watching them continue to flourish.

To receive this message after so many years was a very special reminder of why we do what we do. ❤️
