Congratulations to everyone that graded for their next belt on the weekend in Griffith. A special mention to some of my Karate sisters - Senpai Gabby attained her Nidan belt and Senpai Corrie attaining her first Black belt! You both showed strength and determination. It was a honour to be there for your next karate milestone.

Today is a huge day for several of our Kyokushin brothers and sisters as they step up to attempt their Nidan (2nd Dan) and Shodan (1st Dan) Black Belt gradings.

We especially want to wish our dear dojo friend Corrie all the very best as she goes for her Shodan. Corrie has trained with us many times here in Rutherglen, and she is a truly special friend to me and to our dojo family.

A strong shout‑out also to Senpai Rodney from Canberra and Senpai Gabby from Wodonga as they take on their Nidan gradings, along with all other students attempting their Shodan today.

Good luck to every grading candidate—may you give your best and continue progressing on your Kyokushin journey.

These guys fill my cup!
What an awesome class to finish the school term. Tonight each student discussed something they had learnt this term and took the class through it. We also did some great bag work and finished by watching videos of some students competing in tournaments.
We take a well deserved break now for school holidays. See you in term 3! Osu 👊🏻

Respect, discipline, perseverance, understanding, appreciation. Karate is so much more that kicking and punching. If you are interested in participating in a sport that gives you so much more than physical endurance,
send me a message and come and train!

In karate culture, “Arigatō gozaimash*ta” and “Osu (Oss)” represent two very different expressions of respect—one formal and reflective, the other strong and enduring.
Arigatō gozaimash*ta is a polite and formal way of saying “thank you,” typically used at the end of training. It reflects gratitude toward the instructor, training partners, and the learning experience itself. When a karateka says this, usually with a bow, it shows humility, appreciation, and respect for the dojo and everyone in it.
Osu (押忍), on the other hand, carries a deeper and more intense meaning. It is commonly used during training to express respect, acknowledgment, perseverance, and fighting spirit. Saying “Osu” is not just polite—it shows commitment, readiness to endure hardship, and a strong mindset. It can mean “yes,” “I understand,” or “I will push through.”
In simple terms, “Arigatō gozaimash*ta” is gratitude after the journey, while “Osu” is the spirit that carries you through it.

Starting Karate as an adult Myth Busters:

‘I’m too old’ - you are never too old to try something new

‘I’m not fit enough’- everyone has to start somewhere, my classes are designed to challenge,
not to cause a heart attack. Everyone has to start from somewhere.

‘I’m too uncoordinated’ - karate teaches coordination, everything takes time when you start something new.

Stop talking about it, stop thinking about it, just come and give it a go.
