With the PBR coming to Gresford in February 2027 and Kirkwood Produce being a proud sponsor, I thought sharing these old photos of Dad (Norm Kirkwood) might be fitting. 🌾
I have no information on what year or where these photos where taken, but if anyone has I'd love to hear from them. I do know they would be somewhere around the late 1950s early 1960s.
I have asked Dad about these and he told me that he and his brother Graham would ride the train to rodeos, getting home on the Sunday after the mandatory celebrations, hard luck stories...you drew a better horse then me.
Looking at the background, a lot has certainly changed.
I still to this day have Dads spurs, his saddle and his chaps. Dad use to shoe the horses in the chaps. I remember the legs not having leather straps and buckles but string instead to tie them to his legs.
I also remember a story dad told me about the distinctive stain like marks they had on the inside of the legs. Upon asking him about them he said "Well, see, that is from the lemonade cordial we use to pour on them, when it dried it became sticky and gave you more grip". Now I’m not sure if this was totally accurate or dad was pulling my leg, but he did at the time have a can of KB he was sipping on.
