Rowville Secondary College

Rowville Secondary College The official page of Rowville Secondary College. Rowville Secondary College is one great school with four strengths based learning programs.

These include Rowville General Excellence, Rowville Maths & Science Academy, Rowville Institute of Arts and Rowville Sports Academy. Our four programs focus on the child and their individual strengths and talents. Rowville Secondary College officially opened in 1990 with approximately 180 students in years 7 and 8. The student population has now grown to over 1800 across two campuses. The original

campus, later referred to as "The Western Campus", caters to students in years 7 to 12 in our General Excellence program, as well as being home to our Maths and Science Academy (MSA). The Eastern Campus opened in 1996 and our 7 to 12 Sports Academy (RSA) and Institute of the Arts (RIA) students attend here. Although the College is located on two campuses, Rowville Secondary College is one school. Curriculum, policies programs, uniforms and rules are the same on both campuses and staff take consistent approaches in dealing with students. Teachers from both campuses meet together, and all curriculum planning meetings are held as one school. All College committees, including School Council, have representation from each campus so that all decisions and College directions represent the views of staff, students and parents in the College as a whole. Although the total enrolment is large, student intake at each campus is smaller than many of our neighbouring schools. Our class sizes are kept to a maximum of 26 with some classes often smaller than this figure. Students at each campus are provided with opportunities to take part in all College activities such as instrumental music, sport, outdoor education and other extracurricular activities including the always popular annual College production. Teachers are based on one of the campuses for the school year, but are encouraged to move between campuses every few years to ensure consistency in all areas of College operation. Rowville Secondary College aims to provide the highest quality education to all our students. We strive to see students leave Rowville Secondary College happy, confident and ready for success in a changing world. The College staff work closely with parents and the community to ensure that these goals are achieved.

Food Technology News...

Recently at the West, Year 11 students had to follow a design brief for their SAC where they had to create a "grab and go" healthy apple product. Jaffles, muffins and a slice were a part of the array of products produced.

Also at the West Year 12 students created a healthy meal targeted at teenagers that had to follow the Australian Dietary Guidelines.

In August 9M was given the opportunity to expand their knowledge on playgrounds by visiting PlayCo (one of Australia’s largest playground manufacturers).

At PlayCo 9M learned about the different types of playground equipment, the costs involved in producing them, and the different types of safety flooring used. 9M then went on a tour around the facility, where they were able to see of the equipment being painted and manufactured.

The students gained an understanding about the different stages involved in creating playground equipment, while also being able to see how it is used in the playgrounds made.

The entire Maths and Science Academy cohort went out to Werribee Zoo to celebrate Science Week in August. We engaged in a classification and a STEM program, went on a safari and toured some of the exhibits.

This is what our students had to say:

"I learnt the difference between mega, macro, and micro fauna, with some examples to go with them which really helped me understand." - Thomas H.

"I learnt about what elephant skulls look like, different conservation strategies and structural adaptations that support animals." - Luka.

"I learnt how gorilla doctors have a very limited backpack to what they can take to save gorillas so it is really important to consider what they take!" - Burhan.

"We put together a "Go bag" for the Gorilla Doctors to use in some given medical scenarios! I had a lot of fun!" – Oviya.

"I learnt that the Scimitar Horned Oryx was extinct in the wild and they helped to repopulate them in captivity" – Gavin.

"I enjoyed seeing the lions, they were all laying right by the viewing window it was so cool!" - Veronica.

"I loved getting to see all the animals up close and not in cages roaming around !" - Mya.

The Hands on Learning students at RSC have been busy creating a workbench and toy tools for the Rowville Kindergarten students.

The bench is made from recycled materials and is double sided. It will be delivered to the Kindergarten by the end of the term.

Giving back to the local community is an important part of the Hands on Learning program. The students always love making something to donate.

Last Friday RSC came together to celebrate Health & Wellbeing & Wear it Purple Day, a national day that celebrates LGBTQIA+ young people and promotes supportive, safe and inclusive environments.

Students and staff embraced the day by wearing free dress with a splash of purple, creating a vibrant display of support and school spirit across the College.

The Plaza was buzzing at lunchtime, with students taking part in a range of activities including egg and spoon races, hacky sack challenges, a scavenger hunt and music. A dedicated, purple-themed activity station offered badge making, face painting and ‘Colours of Courage’ bracelets.

Our SRC also ran a popular BBQ lunch, raising funds for headspace and supporting youth mental health and wellbeing.

A huge thank you to our SRC students, teachers and staff for organising such an engaging and meaningful day and for helping make Wear it Purple Day a memorable celebration of diversity, connection and wellbeing.

Recently we celebrated National Science Week, with this year’s schools theme, “Seeds of Science: Nurturing Knowledge for All.” The theme celebrates curiosity, discovery and the way great ideas can take root, grow and inspire new possibilities.

We brought science to life across Rowville Secondary College with a fun-filled day on Wednesday 19 August - there were challenges, experiments and hands-on activities.

The day kicked off with our Periodic Table Recitation Challenge, which saw some impressive participation from students. A special congratulations to Lisaru, who successfully recited the elements all the way to Bromine -number 35 on the Periodic Table.

At lunchtime, students were treated to some spectacular dry ice demonstrations and methane bubbles, along with a range of science-themed 'Minute to Win It' challenges.

Students also had the opportunity to get up close with science by exploring specimens under the microscope and taking part in a variety of fun and engaging chemistry experiments.

A big thank you to our Science staff and to everyone who joined in the fun and helped make National Science Week 2026 such a success.

Good luck to our wonderful RIA-Rowville Institute of the Arts Dance Troupe who will be competing in the TFT Dancestar Nationals Competition today, Monday 31st August in the beautiful Sunshine Coast QLD.

Our Lyrical troupe has successfully been selected for Nationals and both our soloists in the Lyrical and Jazz audition section, will be competing at the Nationals Competition.

The students have been working on these routines since early Term 2 and this is the first time for us to compete at Nationals with TFT. We are very excited for the opportunity ahead and we know the students will shine on stage no matter the outcome.

QUANTUM CYBER ESCAPE ROOM CHALLENGE

Recently the students of Year 7 and 8 MSA got the wonderful opportunity to participate in the Quantum Cyber Escape Room Challenge, held at Quantum Victoria. In this fun and engaging program, we got to explore many new ideas, and we all really had to crack our brains to figure out how to complete the challenges.

One of the activities we participated in was a cipher challenge. We had to decrypt many different messages to solve different puzzles to escape successfully. This challenge pushed us to use our creative and logical thinking and opened our eyes to the brilliance behind secret messages.

Another activity we participated in was a key/code breaking challenge. Here we got to learn about how to calculate the ratio of a key, find out the biting code of a key, as well as learning how to use social media to find a person’s password. This lesson taught us to not reveal sensitive information that could leak things about us.

The third activity we participated in revolved around phishing, where we learnt how to detect dodgy emails, as well as detecting a person impersonating someone. This challenge not only made us think, but gave us an insight into the real world, and opened our eyes to more cyber threats we face every day.

All in all, this program was an amazing and eye-opening experience and made us push our brains to solve the many engaging challenges.
