Recently Class 8M met Dr. Hayden Dalton, Geochemist from the University of Melbourne. Dr. Dalton gave our class a deeper insight of geology as a subject, as well as what a geochemist might do and study in their day-to-day life.
We saw slices of colourful rocks, ranging from popping pinks to bursting blues. The rock slices were cut to a thickness of 30 micrometres, to allow light to pass through the minerals for us to see them under the microscope.
After the fascinating crystals, we learnt about Dr. Dalton's research about how volcanoes form diamonds, and why natural diamonds are so rare and expensive. It was a fascinating and valuable experience to hear from a university lecturer about his private research, and for him to dedicate his time to come out and present to us.
Thank you to our teachers for organised this presentation, and to Dr. Hayden Dalton for sharing this wonderful study to our class.

"Recently 7M STEM completed an acid-based titration. We're learning this technique for our upcoming water quality testing at Dandenong Creek. In the burette we put hydrochloric acid, and we had to slowly drop the hydrochloric acid into the conical flask until the mixture was very light pink - this is called the end point. A couple more drops and we would overshoot and the mixture would turn hot pink. From a student standpoint this was one of the best STEM lessons we have had this year. I enjoyed it very much." - Thomas H, student 7M.
