Yr10 STEM/Aerospace 'A' class during Tuesday's excursion to Brisbane Airport. Facilties visited included Qantas Hangar 3 and Aviation Australia. The students also undertook an airport perimeter tour with Brisbane Airport Corporation (BAC) and visited the Southern Cross aircraft at the Sir Charles Kingsford Smith memorial. The 'B' group will be visting next term. A big thank you to Qantas, Aviation Australia, and BAC for hosting the students.

The Yr10 STEM/Aerospace class got to play with the Arduino/Zumo games they designed. My vote goes for the elevator that is activated by a photoresistor (just ignore the string that catches the Zumo). 2nd place goes to the boom gate that can't be destroyed!

One of the consoles inside the MOC showing satellites in orbit. Look how congested the area up to 500km altitude is! When you click on a sat, the information concerning who it is and its orbital parameters pops up. If you are a space person, pause the video so you can read the info - a lot of it is straight forward. Epoch age (real) is the time difference between when a satellite's data was generated and the current time. Data is considered 'Fresh' if it is less than 12 (and up to 24 hours) old; this is highly accurate and ideal for precise tracking. 1 to 3 days is considered normal and is fine for most routine tracking applications. The tracking data is considered 'Stale' if it is greater than 7 days after which accuracy degrades rapidly, especially for Low Earth Orbit (LEO) objects. So interesting!

The final stop on the CSIRO tour was the Missions Operation Centre. Principal Research Engineer (in minerals) C took the students through Australia's involvement with space and what the future is looking like for the industry. The students then went inside to observe what a mission control environment looks like.

Final stop was the CSIRO or Commonwealth Scientific and Research Organisation at Pullenvale. Students were taken on a tour of the facilities including the Centre for Advanced Technologies. Lectures were given by a minerals engineer and geologist before students were able to control a Moon/Mars rover on a simulated off-world gravel pad. We were then taken to a different section where a variety of robots were on display including the 4-legged 'dog' variety, as well as a heavier 300kg robot with a lidar sensor. While the students watched, this robot was sent off on a mini-mission outside where it was able to map out the test area. Finally, the Yr11s were taken into the CSIRO Mission Control Centre where they were shown the environment where space missons are controlled from.
