INTRODUCING: ROGER 🎸

Roger teaches Guitar and Bass at The Music Industry. He has experience, playing blues, rock, pop, folk, classical and jazz guitar styles and has over 40 years of experience teaching in secondary school music departments, holding a Diploma of Education qualification and a Bachelor of Arts Degree.

When teaching beginners, Roger likes to focus on developing rhythm guitar skills and playing melodies. He emphasizes the importance of developing effective and efficient practice techniques and provides constructive feedback and tips to help nurture growing musicians.
He enjoys participating in band performances and collaborations at the school for our various concerts! Also an avid community musician, Roger plays Jazz Guitar in the local ‘Swing it Again’ Big Band.

INTRODUCING: POPPY 🎤

Poppy is one of our wonderful vocal teachers at MI! She started her singing journey at just 5 years old, and now inspires and challenges her students to be their best when it comes to vocal performance!

She has an extensive musical theatre background under her belt, with 7 years of musical theatre experience at Young Australian Broadway Chorus (YABC), and landed multiple lead roles in theatrical productions during her school years.

Her favourite genres are R&B and Pop and she loves artists such as Ariana Grande, Tate McRae, and SZA. When it comes to songwriting, Poppy is unstoppable with opportunity. Having attended the Music Industry’s Queensland songwriting camps over the last few years and honing her songwriting craft, she is now working alongside SONY award-winning producers and artists to create a collection of original music.

INTRODUCING: TILLY 🎹

Tilly teaches piano at MI and has been surrounded by music since age six. Inspired by singer-songwriters and her early love of Taylor Swift piano books, she went on to study Contemporary Piano during VCE Music Performance and now studies a Diploma of Music alongside a Bachelor of Arts at The University of Melbourne.

Discovering songwriting at age 13 was a pivotal point in Tilly’s musical journey, and it has become a major part of her musical identity, using her piano background to craft catchy songs with unique hooks and musicality. In 2022 she released her debut single ‘Nothing Is The Same As It Always Was’ under her artist project ‘Tillee’, achieving nationwide Triple J airplay. She now does local gigs around the Peninsula and Melbourne and looks ahead to releasing new material detailing her life and experiences in these two contrasting environments.  Tilly’s musical experience has led her to do session work with other artists, accompany other performers, and help other songwriters at MI to craft musical elements in their own songs. She inspires her students to be positive, and enjoys teaching people of all ages and skill levels to become engaged in music and the piano.

INTRODUCING: ADAM 🥁

Adam is our drum teacher at The Music Industry. He has a passion for blues, soul, funk and fusion styles with musical influences such as Jimi Hendrix, Pink Floyd, Steely Dan and Dire Straits.

He’s had over 16 years of musical experience and performing across the Peninsula and Melbourne alike. In his spare time, he plays for local artist projects, cover bands and swing/jazz ensembles. His experience also spans into the recording studio, doing session work and recording for projects with other local musicians.

Adam has had 7+ years of teaching experience and loves teaching students of all ages and skill levels. He tailors to each student’s goals with a focus on building good musical technique and listening skills.

INTRODUCING: TARKYN 🎸

Welcome to Term 2, and our Meet the Teacher Series, where we spotlight every teacher making a difference at The Music Industry.

Tarkyn is one of our wonderful guitar teachers here at the school! He has played the instrument since he was 8, with his primary genres being funk, jazz, and finger-style guitar. He cites his main influences as musicians such as John Mayer, Geoff Achison, and Jeff Beck.
Tarkyn is no stranger to the spotlight, having played lead guitar in the incredible Victorian State Schools Spectacular show for the last five years, in front of tens of thousands of people. He also works with our amazing student bands every week and prepares them for performances every term.

If you want to begin your guitar journey and aim for the spotlight like Tarkyn, MI is just the place to begin 🎶
