It’s wild to think that 21 years ago my makeup teacher told me that I would never be good at hair because let’s be honest when I was at makeup school I not only sucked at styling hair I hated doing it.

If I were to go back to 18 year old me I would tell her that one day you will learn to love hair and it will just click for you. You will love it so much that people and schools will literally PAY to have you teach their students how to style hair for shoots and media work.

I truly love seeing students fall in love with hair and have that light bulb moment I had all those years ago.

Warming up like a millennial dancer 👯‍♀️

Not a lot of people know this about me but before hair and makeup I was a pro dancer for 11 years. I did it all except for ballet which I avoided because the music was so slow and my brain couldn’t comprehend moving at such a slow controlled pace 🤣

After I got into hair and makeup, I danced for a bit and then got busy with work I ended up stopping for a long time.
Six months ago I decided to have an “eff it” moment and start doing jazz, theatre jazz and contemporary again because It’s something that makes my soul light up. As much as I love my job it doesn’t fulfill me like dance does: unfortunately I’m too “old” to pursue dance full time (if you’re over 25 in the dance world that’s considered old 😬) but it won’t stop from enjoying the s**t out of it and keeping fit and healthy all at the same time 💪.

When I heard the Irish accent over the phone, I knew that fun and interesting convos were going to be had 😜

We decided not to put anything over the unfortunate breakout that had made itself known, the morning of the appointment, because applying product over it would make it look and feel worse so we decided to keep it hanging so it could go through motions.

So many of us don’t like talking about uncomfortable topics (like firing), it’s like it’s a bit taboo but I want to change that.
I want to share why I decided to get rid of the majority of my teams and why it’s the best thing I’ve done.

After an overhaul of my own business, at the beginning of the year, and a bit of a re-structure I had to make the hard decision and let the majority of my team’s go - not because of a lack of talent but because of a lack of integrity, work ethic and attitude.

I spent so many years trying to figure out why our growth was becoming stagnant and I finally realised that it wasn’t what I was offering it was the people I had invited in.

Don’t get me wrong - getting rid of someone sucks and I hate doing it but I realised that if I wanted to grow I needed to start over again.
Running a business is hard enough but managing people is probably the hardest and having the wrong people can cause so many problems.

So why did it take me so long to finally pull the pin? I thought ignoring it would make it better but it actually made it worse - not just for me but for my clients as well and after months of back and forth I said to myself if I don’t do this now I won’t have a business in the next 12 months.

So if you’re an owner of any business and are in the same boat - my wisdom to you is listen to your gut. If something feels off, then it probably is and it most likely needs to be removed.
