What is MASK-ED™ (KRS simulation)? MASK-ED™ (KRS simulation) is an innovative high fidelity simulation technique which involves the use of silicone props, including masks, torsos, hands and feet. The props are worn over the informed educator to mask them. The hidden educator then transforms into a character/ person with a history/story which is relevant to the learning experience. The character se

rves as a platform for teaching. KRS stands for knowledgeable, realistic and spontaneous simulation. Kerry Reid-Searl developed MASK-ED™ (KRS simulation) while teaching undergraduate nursing students at CQUniversity Rockhampton, Queensland. The MASK-ED™ (KRS simulation) educational approach has applications in many fields besides nursing, and in many contexts in addition to tertiary education. Who can use MASK-ED™(KRS Simulation)? MASK-ED™ (KRS simulation) will be made available to educators across a wide range of disciplines including (and not limited to): nursing, medicine, social work, pharmacy, psychology and education. The technique can be used in live classes of all sizes, conference, or workshop scenarios as well as part of an integrated video/DVD resource. The MASK-ED™ (KRS simulation) technique is not limited to organisations that can afford expensive resources. On the contrary it is within reach of any educator who can look outside the box to create a learning experience that presents some level of reality. What is needed to be able to use MASK-ED™ (KRS Simulation)? In order to effectively use the simulation technique it is essential that the educator fully understands the MASK-ED ™ (KRS simulation) approach including the preparation of the educator, the design of characters and scenarios, the modes of delivery and the simulation experience. The MASK-ED™ (KRS simulation) includes:

To all Mask Ed supporters. It is with such sadness that I announce the passing of Lea Vieth. Lea played a significant part in the journey of Mask Ed and Pup Ed. We conducted workshops together from Australia to the USA, Europe and the UK. She shared the stage with me on our many key note events throughout the world. Our early research and publications are still cited to this day. Her ability to empathise with the Mask Ed character and her unique way of connecting with these vulnerable individuals was amazing. Lea and I could be on stage and without preparation we could move into a scenario and have the audience captured. It was not unusual to receive a standing ovation when presenting with Lea. It was also not unusual to be in front of a crowd of more than a thousand people. In the simulation world Lea had impact. Lea role modelled what perfection in nursing is. Her ability to care, listen and genuine regard for patients is what she portrayed. In real nursing life it is what she practiced. Additionally her infectious personality and giggle added to the way people connected with her throughout the world. No one could do what Lea did with Mask Ed. From a student perspective the videos created continue to live on. She provided students with examples of excellence in care.

In my journey with Pup Ed it was Lea who helped make this possible. Alike Mask Ed, I have never experienced anyone who could engage with children with a puppet like she did. Lea had the ability to suspend disbelief and not only bring a smile to a child’s face but show compassion, care and wisdom. Lea Vieth was exceptional. She was extraordinary and I will continue to miss her every day.
