Ever had one of those "What should I be doing with my child?" moments? You might already have the answer at home.

Earlier this year, every Goodstart family received a What & When for Families guide for each child. If it's been tucked away in a drawer since then, now might be the perfect time to pull it back out.

The guide is packed with simple, play-based activities that support your child's learning and development at home. Best of all, it's written in your child's voice, with ideas tailored to their age and developmental stage.

From singing songs with babies and playing peek-a-boo, to "I Spy" games, storytelling and treasure hunts with older children, the activities are designed to fit naturally into everyday moments you already share together.

We know learning doesn't only happen in the classroom. Those small moments at home can help build big communication, language and literacy skills.

Take another look through your What & When for Families guide to explore age-appropriate activities and learning ideas you can try together.

💛 Sometimes the best learning resource is the one you already have at home.

🎨🐄 Mudgeeraba Show Art Competition 🐄🎨

Our Kindy children were very excited to create their own special artworks to enter into the Mudgeeraba Show Art Competition!

A huge congratulations to the winners, and well done to every child who participated. 🌟 We are so proud of the creativity, effort and enthusiasm our children showed.

Although we didn't win and the show was unfortunately cancelled this year, we still had lots of fun along the way learning about farm animals, exploring farm life and expressing our ideas through art. 🐮🐷🐑🐓

We’ll try again next year! 💛

🌸 Growing Kindness in Kindy 🌸

Our Kindness Flowers help children begin to recognise the kindness within themselves, while also encouraging educators to intentionally notice and acknowledge all the kind, caring and helpful things children do each day.

Rather than kindness going unnoticed, we name it, celebrate it and help children understand the positive impact their actions have on others. 💗

Our Kindness Flowers were created by our Kindy Teacher following her Kindy Uplift training in Conscious Discipline, bringing this learning into our everyday practice and helping us grow a culture where kindness is noticed, valued and encouraged.

🌱 What we notice, we nurture.

🚀 Exploring Space Through Multiliteracies 🪐

Our Kindy children have been exploring the wonder of space and our solar system through many different ways of learning and communicating.

We watched videos to see the planets in action, read books together, created a large collaborative space mural, and practised early literacy by writing and recognising the names of the planets. 🌎✨

Our learning then continued through play, with children using planets, spacemen and other materials in our sensory table to create their own stories and imaginary worlds.

By exploring one topic through videos, books, songs, writing, art, conversation and imaginative play, children can make connections and represent their understanding in ways that are meaningful to them.

This is multiliteracies in action, recognising that children learn, communicate and make meaning in many different ways. 🚀💫

🎨 Creativity Every Day 💗

Creative experiences aren’t something we bring out occasionally, they are part of every day.

Our art areas aren’t hidden away or only available during planned experiences. Paint, drawing materials, collage and creative resources are accessible to children throughout the day, giving them the freedom to return to their ideas, experiment with different materials and create when inspiration strikes.

Sometimes the process is messy, sometimes it’s carefully planned, and sometimes it changes completely along the way, and that’s the beauty of it!

By making creativity part of our everyday environment, children learn that their ideas are valued and there are many different ways to express them. 🎨✨

🔨 Woodworking in Kindy

Our Kindy children have their very own woodworking space, which is opened each day for children to explore, create and have a go using real tools and real materials.

Woodworking is an important part of our approach to risky play. In a safe and supported environment, children learn to assess risk, solve problems, persevere when things are challenging and build confidence in their own abilities.

These experiences also support social and emotional wellbeing, encouraging children to cooperate, communicate, regulate emotions, develop independence and feel proud of what they can achieve.

This is particularly meaningful when considering the Australian Early Development Census (AEDC) and the developmental needs of children within our Robina community. Through everyday experiences like woodworking and supported risky play, we can intentionally strengthen skills across areas such as social competence, emotional maturity, physical health and wellbeing, and communication.

🌻 Inspired by Van Gogh 🎨

Our children have been exploring Vincent van Gogh’s Sunflowers through their own artwork. After looking closely at the famous painting, children noticed the colours, shapes, petals and different sized flowers before creating their own sunflower masterpieces.

Rather than trying to make every painting look the same, we encouraged children to observe, interpret and create in their own way. Each artwork is wonderfully different, reflecting each child’s ideas, imagination and unique way of seeing the world.

Because art isn’t about making it “right”, it’s about looking, wondering, experimenting and expressing yourself. 🌻💛

🌿 Mud Kitchen Magic 🌿

Our mud kitchen has become such a special part of our outdoor environment! The children have helped to create this space themselves, sharing their ideas, deciding what it needs and arranging the materials in ways that make sense to their play.

It has also become a wonderful morning transition space. Children arrive excited to see what’s available and can’t wait to start mixing, pouring, scooping and creating. 💗

There’s something timeless about making a good mud cake! 🥣🌿

Did you love making mud cakes when you were a child? We’d love to hear your memories!
