Now, use the same notes but starting from A flat to A flat, and you get an Ab Natural Minor.

Let’s explore different types of minor:
Harmonic Minor - add a raised 7th note -> G natural
Melodic Minor Ascending - add raised 6th and 7th notes -> F natural, G natural
Melodic Minor Descending - remove raised 6th and 7th notes -> returning back to the natural minor

A relative is one that shares the same key signature (in this case, Cb Major and Ab minor with seven flats).

You can find any Minor key from its relative Major by counting down 3 semitones (using 3 letter names).

I love finding musical inspirations and turning them into vocal exercises.

This riff from Coldplay’s Adventure of a Lifetime is a perfect example. Slow it down, map out the notes, add solfege… and suddenly we’ve got a cool new pattern!
