Are we witnessing the demise of serious test batting? Both the Australian and English batsmen seem completely bereft of the basic conventions of batting we were all taught as youngsters.
A. If the ball is pitched up you go forward and if it’s short you go back!
B. Your bat should come through and meet the ball as straight as possible
C. You build your innings while being assertive against the bowlers.

So many technical flaws it’s almost unwatchable….
Apart from Cummins there is no Lillee, Thomson, Holding, Snow, Garner or Warnie or Underwood
Is it just me?

Ok, what should we make of our team's performance at the ICC world cup 2019?
Clearly we made the semi final stage on the back of outstanding efforts from Aaron Finch, David Warner and Mitchell Stark, with support from Steve Smith and Alex Carey. Most people would say they went ok and were outplayed by an excellent and well balanced English side in the semi final.
Fair enough!
What concerns me still is the direction of Cricket Australia staff, starting with Pat Howard right through all levels of coaching positions.
I have the following concerns:
1. Our batters still display serious technical flaws which continue to be exposed at the top level, Finch's troubles with the swinging ball, Handscombe's bizzare stance & method and the inability of Maxwell and Stoinos to come to grips with building an innings is astounding.
Cricket Australia and CV put on many coaching forums and provide information for lower level coaches but they need to impress the need for basic technique!!
A great example of the value of a sound technique was shown in the performance of Alex Carey. What a delight it was to see an Australian batter play forward when the ball was full and back when it was short!!
I know Smith has his own way but when his eye begins to fail his results will wane very quickly, hopefully another few years left for him.He is a very rare example of a different method being successful, the rest of us need the basic!!
Langer, Ponting etc get off your bums and get to work please.
2. On a positive note, the team showed great sportsmanship throughout the WC and good to see our players interacting well with their opposition and umpires etc, well done Finchy!

The BBL final gave us a great game of cricket and the format is here to stay!
Debate will rage about the timing and length of the series but it has been a major success. Anything that gets younger people interested in the game has to be a good thing. I still prefer the longer form for everything that it can deliver and for national pride but the next generation may mature into test match watching adults perhaps.
What was great was to see the young talent on display and under pressure in front of a big crowd.
Just in this game we saw Sam Harper and Sebastian Gotch as well as more exposure for Adam Zampa and the likes of Glenn Maxwell and Peter Handscombe. None were perfect but all have showed enough to suggest higher honours shouldn't be too far away.
While watching it occurred to me that this T20 format makes the 50 over game almost redundant. They can become a little boring, especially in those middle overs. Let's see what unfolds in the remaining Sheffield Shield games as players attempt to put their names forward for the tour of the U.K. this winter.

So what should we make of the Australian cricket team's progress since the cheating scandal? What should we be looking for from Cricket Australia's entire organisation?

Well, I feel that we still don't understand what is wrong with our culture. The 'Barassi style' winning isn't everything, it's the only thing mentality that has evolved since the 'chappell' era has led us to being the most despised cricket nation. Is that what we want? In the late 1970's the great Pakistani all rounder Asif Iqbal described us as 'ugly, rude, swearing Australians! Sir Richard Hadlee also stated that if his children carried on like the Australian cricket team he would 'smack their backsides'! More recently, England's Moeen Ali believed the Australian team under Steve Smith consistently went too far with the on field chatter.

Maybe every cricketer that is selected to represent us should listen to Bradman's speech. The 'Don' states that competitive spirit and drive for success is compatible with the highest level of sportsmanship. International diplomacy has never been more important and perhaps cricket can be a tool to make a better world!

In my mind, current results are secondary to how we are being perceived by our opponents. We will always be competitive so I feel we need to change our mindset as to what is more important in the bigger picture.

OK, so how has Tim Paine gone so far? I think he has managed the tricky situation pretty well. His altercation with Risbah Pant and subsequent photos of Pant holding his kids was amusing and harmless. I didn't notice any send offs or other chatter from the team during the summer so let's hope this will continue. How will the team go when Warner and Smith return?

Jury still out!
