Too often, leaders responsible for Aboriginal programs are sent to a classroom for “cultural training” and expected to walk away culturally competent. But real learning doesn’t happen in a PowerPoint.

On-Country cultural immersion is different. It’s deeper. It’s relational. It’s transformative.

When you learn on Country, you don’t just learn about culture — you experience it.
You learn through yarning, listening, walking, sitting, observing, reflecting.
You begin to understand that Country is alive, that knowledge is carried in place, and that relationships matter more than checklists.

Classroom training can build awareness.
On-Country learning builds cultural humility, accountability and respect.

For leaders overseeing Aboriginal programs and outcomes, this isn’t a “nice to have” — it’s essential. It shapes better decisions, strengthens relationships with community, and supports genuine self-determination rather than tokenistic approaches.

I’d love to hear others’ thoughts:
👉 Have you experienced cultural immersion on Country?
👉 How did it change your perspective or leadership?

Let’s talk.
