Dr Christine Ngai Lam Yau was trained as a classical pianist in Beijing Central Conservatory of Music and Shanghai Conservatory of Music in China. Before embarking on educational research as an academic, Christine has been continuously working as an accompanist, piano teacher and music director of music studios in Hong Kong, China, Australia and England. She then completed her Master of Music at U
niversity of UNSW in Australia in 2005, where she became interested in music education research. Since then, she has been a regular presenter at various conferences in Spain, Malaysia, Italy, China, England and Scotland held by organisations such as International Society for Music Education, being particularly involved with the ISME Commissions for the Education of the Professional Musician (CEPROM) and Community Music Activity (CMA). Later, she worked as a research associate for the Music Education Research Team at the Royal College of Music in London between 2006 and 2008 before undertaking her MPhil research and Doctoral research at Cambridge University. She completed her PhD in 2015 in the topic titled “The nature of one-to-one instrumental/vocal pedagogy in music conservatoire setting: Two cases from a UK conservatoire”. She is currently an educational consultant for an international school, a piano teacher and an independent music education researcher for an NGO. As a piano teacher with over 20 years of teaching experience working with students of all ages and abilities, Dr Christine Yau is known for her dedication and creative teaching methods, and guiding them as they strive and flourish as a musician and pianist. She loves sharing her passion for music and learning for others, and she is so grateful that she gets to do this privileged job every day. As someone who has worked incredibly hard to get to where she is today as a musician and pianist, she knows the importance of good piano teaching. Over the years of interdisciplinary training in classical music training, dalcroze eurhythmics, music educational research, psychology and counselling, she has taken everything that she has learned over the years from various teaching methods and academic knowledge, and integrated it into a unique approach that is creative, supportive and transformative.
