Ever had one of those "What should I be doing with my child?" moments? You might already have the answer at home.

Earlier this year, every Goodstart family received a What & When for Families guide for each child. If it's been tucked away in a drawer since then, now might be the perfect time to pull it back out.

The guide is packed with simple, play-based activities that support your child's learning and development at home. Best of all, it's written in your child's voice, with ideas tailored to their age and developmental stage.

From singing songs with babies and playing peek-a-boo, to "I Spy" games, storytelling and treasure hunts with older children, the activities are designed to fit naturally into everyday moments you already share together.

We know learning doesn't only happen in the classroom. Those small moments at home can help build big communication, language and literacy skills.

Happy Ekka long weekend Moreton Bay 🎡
To everyone attending the Ekka we hope you enjoy a delicious strawberry ice cream as much as our Senior toddlers have enjoyed their own ice cream shop! Using recycled materials the children have been busy engaging in imaginative play, scooping, serving and pretending treats whilst developing their creativity, communication and social skills.

Recently the kindergarten children have been researching and exploring different indigenous games as part of their learning about Aboriginal and Torres Straight islander cultures. Inspired by an Indigenous story that one of the children brought from home the children learned a traditional game called Gitja. In the Koko-yellanji language Gitja signifies the moon. The game involves imitation and imaginative actions along with running and chasing this encourages children to develop their physical skills while engaging with an important aspect of Indigenous culture.

Learning is a never-ending journey and today I had the opportunity to experience this firsthand during my director walk-through of the service. I spent time in the kindergarten room as they explored the question “what do handprints represent in Aboriginal art”.

Rather than simply being given the answer the children used the internet as a research tool to investigate the meaning themselves.
They discovered that handprints are a significant feature in many Aboriginal artworks and can represent identity, belonging, connection to family, country and the presence of people across generations.

Today’s experience was a wonderful reminder that learning is lifelong. As educators we continue to learn alongside children embracing culture perspectives and deepening our understanding together.
