Ever had one of those "What should I be doing with my child?" moments? You might already have the answer at home.

Earlier this year, every Goodstart family received a What & When for Families guide for each child. If it's been tucked away in a drawer since then, now might be the perfect time to pull it back out.

The guide is packed with simple, play-based activities that support your child's learning and development at home. Best of all, it's written in your child's voice, with ideas tailored to their age and developmental stage.

From singing songs with babies and playing peek-a-boo, to "I Spy" games, storytelling and treasure hunts with older children, the activities are designed to fit naturally into everyday moments you already share together.

We know learning doesn't only happen in the classroom. Those small moments at home can help build big communication, language and literacy skills.

🇹🇴 Tongan Language Week 🇹🇴

This week, our centre proudly celebrated Tongan Language Week and embraced the rich culture, language, and traditions of Tonga.
A special thank you to Miss Saane, our Kindy 2 ECT, who shared her culture with the children by wearing traditional Tongan clothing, performing a short cultural dance, and leading the children in a beautiful Tongan greeting song during our yarning circle this morning. Video in the comments below 🙂

The children were engaged and excited as they learned new words, songs, and traditions, helping to build their understanding and appreciation of the diverse cultures within our community.

To make the celebration even more special, Miss Saane also generously prepared and shared a variety of delicious Pacific Island meals for our staff to enjoy, giving everyone an opportunity to experience and celebrate Tongan and Pacific Island culture together.

Miss Saane and Kindergarten 2 sang a song to celebrate Tonga Language Week as it helps children develop respect for cultural diversity, inclusion, and a sense of belonging. It provides opportunities to learn about the Tongan language, traditions, and culture while valuing the backgrounds of Tongan children and families.

This links to the National Quality Standard through inclusive educational programs, respectful relationships and partnerships with families and communities. It also aligns with the Queensland Kindergarten Learning Guidelines by supporting children's identity, connectedness, active learning, and communication.

🌺Happy Cook Islands Language Week!🌺

Today at Goodstart Early Learning Redbank Plains, we proudly celebrated Cook Islands Language Week by embracing the rich culture, language, and traditions of the Cook Islands.

Miss Theresa and her partner Christian did a little performance for the children this morning at yarning circle. She sung a Cook Island childrens song called "My God loves me", with her partner also playing the Ukulele to the song "Sekeseke mai". Enjoy the videos in the comments 🙂

A huge thankyou to Miss Theresa for also preparing a selection of meals through traditional Cook Island foods for our team to enjoy. It was a wonderful opportunity for our educators to come together, experience authentic flavours, and celebrate the importance of sharing and respecting diverse cultures within our centre. They were able to indulge in Banana Poke, Mainaise (Pink Potato Salad), Nz biscuits variety and Raro beverage 😋

Throughout the day, our children also explored the Cook Island culture through conversations, creative art activities of leis and flag paintings, and learning experiences, helping to build an appreciation for the many cultures that make up our community.

Learning about cultural events in early childhood under the Framework builds children's a sense of identity, belonging, and respect for diversity. When educators weave cultural celebrations into daily programs, children connect with their own heritage and learn to value the traditions of others. This practice supports EYLF Outcome 1 (strong sense of identity) and Outcome 2 (connected with and contributing to their world). It helps young children develop empathy, challenge stereotypes, and build inclusive social connections. By experiencing diverse customs, stories, and arts, children gain a rich, respectful worldview that prepares them for a multicultural society.

The research is clear 📚 reading aloud is one of the most powerful things we can do for our children.

When we read with a child, we’re doing far more than sharing a story. We’re building the foundations for language, confidence, curiosity and a lifelong love of learning.

Decades of research shows that children who are read to regularly:

💛 Build stronger language skills
Hearing rich varied language in books exposes children to far more words than everyday conversation alone. This growing vocabulary helps them understand, communicate and make sense of the world.

💛 Develop early literacy skills long before they learn to read
Through stories, children learn how books work – that print carries meaning, that pages turn left to right, and that stories have a beginning, middle and end. These early understandings make learning to read feel familiar and exciting.

💛 Strengthen phonological awareness
Rhymes, rhythms and playful sounds help children hear the building blocks of language.

💛 Grow their comprehension and thinking skills
Talking together about a story, predicting what might happen, wondering how a character feels, and connecting events to real life helps children develop memory, problem-solving, and higher-order thinking.
