Queensland Electricity Users Network Queensland Electricity Users Network is a consumer advocate for affordable & reliable electricity. That saves consumers money and helps the environment.

The Queensland Electricity Users Network (QEUN) is an energy consumer advocate. We advocate for AFFORDABLE and RELIABLE electricity for ALL Queensland households, small businesses and farmers. We believe the transition to a renewable energy future does not have to be at the expense of our economy, jobs, food, energy & water security or reasonable living standards. Formed in 2013, QEUN quickly lear

ned there was no point in complaining about power bills. What the QEUN needed were solutions to the growing energy crisis. Two of our solutions are:

- The KOOMBOOLOOMBA ENERGY AND WATER PROJECT - renewable energy Queenslanders can afford, rely on and drink! It will last for over 100 years and will operate even if the sun is not shining and the wind is not blowing. Best of all it better utilises existing Queensland Government owned energy and water assets. It will also provide cultural and business opportunities for LOCAL First Nations people and more wildlife habitat. The camping and recreational activities on Wooroora Dam (Stage 2) are just the icing on the cake. We envisage the Project would be built, owned and operated by the Queensland Government on behalf of ALL Queenslanders. Because it can be built before the Queensland Government closes its last coal-fired power station, we need your urgent help to encourage the Queensland and Federal Governments to jointly fund a feasibility study before this amazing project is lost to a massive FOREIGN OWNED wind farm.

- The TRAFFIC LIGHT SYSTEM is another initiative championed by QEUN. It would deliver a message direct to your mobile phone when the grid is under stress and Queensland is in danger of blackouts. QEUN is not a one trick pony, we have spent nearly a decade gaining the knowledge needed to come up with viable solutions to this growing energy crisis. A lack of funding means we are not able to monitor and respond to Facebook posts and messages. BUT from now on we will be regularly posting on our page.

Biggest Pumped Hydro in the world cancelled!!

What does cancelling the $36 Billion Pioneer-Burdekin Pumped Hydro near Mackay mean for Queensland’s energy and water supplies?

It means Queensland must find other pumped hydro sites that can together generate 5,000 MW of electricity for at least 12 hours.

Why 12 hours?

Because most of Queensland’s energy storage is 2 to 4 hour batteries owned by foreign companies.
Queensland needs long duration energy storage to cope with wind droughts.

Once coal-fired power stations are gone, most of the pumped hydro sites being considered will be reliant on excess renewable energy to “recharge”. There will be times when there is no excess renewable energy as wind droughts can last for weeks and can occur at the same time as there is low solar.

But there is one Queensland pumped hydro project that can:
• Generate electricity when there is low or no wind and solar
• can be built by 2030 (helping Australia to meet its renewable energy targets) and
• will be the cheapest renewable energy in Queensland (if not Australia) as its an extension of an existing 100% Queensland Government owned hydro asset

The 1,000 MW Koombooloomba Energy and Water Project can supply both electricity and drinking water for the next 100 years from a single footprint.

That saves the Queensland and Federal Government lots of money! Allowing them to spend more money on schools, roads and hospitals and essential services like police.

July 11th at 6pm, demand has ramped up and production of solar generation has ceased. The 8,416 MW demand is a lot larger than the same day midday demand of 5,959 MW. Coal is producing majority of electricity demand with 5,819 MW and wind producing a small 96MW. 💨

Pumped hydro will help to fill nightime solar and wind shortfalls as water can be moved on demand. ⏰✅

At midday today when solar electricity production is usually at its peak, QLD is still reliant on coal for the bulk of its generation, supplying 62% of Queensland’s electricity.

Total QLD generation is 5,959 megawatts of which only 1,901 MW is being produced from solar farms and a mere 84 MW from wind farms due to a lull in wind at wind farms from FNQ to SEQ. Consequently the bulk of QLD generation is today still heavily reliant on coal even in the middle of the day! 🔌🔌

❗️URGENT ACTION NEEDED TO BAN WIND FARMS FROM ALL DAM SITES ❗️

Power bills are far too high!

A looming El Nino weather event could bring on another drought.

But its not all doom and gloom.

Real solutions to Queensland and Australia’s growing energy and water crisis do exist.

One solution is the proposed Koombooloomba Energy and Water Project.

Its renewable energy Queenslanders can afford, rely on and DRINK!

Best of all, a large part of the project is already owned by the Queensland Government.

This helps Queensland to remain in control of its essential services of electricity and water.

BUT this amazing project is threatened by the foreign owned Chalumbin Wind Farm which would supply intermittent electricity to Queensland and NO water.

Help us to advocate for the Queensland and Federal Governments to ban wind farms from all identified and potential dam sites.

Queensland needs water to survive and electricity to thrive.

Please note:

The Federal Environment and Water Minister Tanya Plibersek is imminently due to make a decision on whether to approve the foreign owned Chalumbin Wind Farm based on a Public Environment Report (PER) prepared and submitted to the Minister by the proponent Ark Energy, a subsidiary of Korea Zinc – link.

Public comments and submissions on the Chalumbin Wind Farm PER had to be submitted to Ark Energy not to the Federal Environment and Water Minister.

The Queensland Electricity Users Network did not provide a submission to Ark Energy on its Chalumbin Wind Farm Public Environment Report.

Instead, the QEUN wrote to the Federal Environment and Water Minister – excerpts from the QEUN letter:

“The Koombooloomba Project will be lost if the Federal Government approves the foreign owned Chalumbin Wind Farm – EPBC Act Referral 2021/8983.

Just like a solar farm should never be built on productive farming land, the Chalumbin Wind Farm should not be built on one of the best dam/hydro sites in Australia.

Wind farms can be built in many places throughout the east coast of Australia but dams need to be built in areas of reliable and high rainfall. Viable dam sites are scarce."



"Steps must be put in place to ensure Australia has reliable water supplies through the construction of reliable dams and secure electricity supplies for energy intensive desalination plants.

This will require legislation which bans wind farms from identified viable dam sites.”

On 2 August 2023, the Queensland Government announced it had commenced a review of wind farm developments in Queensland. 💧💧

Hydro, wind and solar have zero emissions. 💧☀️💨
But we need a MIX of generation types if we want affordable power bills and reliable electricity.

The main greenhouse gas emitted by fossil fueled power stations is carbon dioxide.

A gas power station emits 35% to 60% less carbon dioxide compared to a black coal power station. ⛽️

Queensland and NSW have black coal power stations and gas power stations.

Victoria has brown coal and gas power stations.

South Australia and Tasmania have no coal power stations but do have gas power stations. ⛽️

Due to a change in the MIX of power stations, carbon dioxide emissions in the National Electricity Market (NEM) have fallen from 820 to 690 kg CO2 -e/MWh (carbon dioxide equivalent per megawatt hour).

A MIX of generation will ensure there is sufficient generation to meet demand even when there is not enough solar and wind and all the batteries have gone flat.

The Koombooloomba Energy and Water Project is renewable energy consumers can afford, rely on and drink! 💰✅💦

By 2035 the Queensland Government plans to close its last coal fired power station! Over the last 12 months 76% of QLD’s power has come from coal. In the future we will be reliant on renewable energy and storage. The Koombooloomba Project is energy storage that will provide electricity when there is not enough wind and solar to meet Queenslands electricity demand. 💧💧
