Over 80% of Australians Have a Long-Term Health Condition, according to the Australian Bureau of Statistics.

Think about what that means for your classes. Your students are not a room of uniformly healthy adults. Most of them are managing something, whether they’ve told you or not.

Yoga therapy training can help. It gives you the framework to work safely and confidently with the students who are already in front of you.

Sal Flynn is one of Australia's most experienced Yoga therapy educators. She has trained well over 400 Yoga therapists.

She says, There comes a point in many Yoga teachers’ careers when they start to wonder, “What’s next?” They still love teaching, but something begins to feel… repetitive.

Many Yoga teachers describe it as feeling like they’re on a treadmill. They’re still passionate about Yoga, they know it changes lives - it’s changed their own but after a few years, they start looking for more meaning, more depth, more impact."

In 2002 I started teaching yoga. I loved the practice, the students, the sense of purpose that came from sharing something I believed in.

As the years passed something shifted. By 2006 I was teaching all over Sydney, virtually every day of the week. I was spending hours in the car and not getting paid for the driving. I had my own back injury to manage. And I had imposter syndrome that wouldn’t let up.

The moment that stays with me the most is when a student would mention, at the start or end of class, that they’d just had a stroke, a heart attack, a knee replacement, or a condition I’d never heard of. I would freeze and think, what did I just teach them? The more I taught, the less I felt I knew.

At that point there wasn’t a single accredited yoga therapy training in Australia I could enrol in. I had to find my own way forward, and that’s the reason the Yoga Therapy Institute exists.

After nearly 25 years, we’ve trained more than 430 yoga therapists using the framework I wish had existed for me back then. Read my Special Report: The Great Yoga Teacher Myth to find out more: https://yogatherapyinstitute.com.au/report/the-great-yoga-teacher-myth/

One significant difference between a Yoga therapist and a Yoga teacher is the way they interact with their clients.

🧘‍♀️Yoga Teacher’s Approach
A Yoga teacher generally works with groups in a class setting. Modifications may be offered to individual students but Yoga classes are not generally customised to the individual’s needs. Yoga teachers may also provide one to one classes. In this context, the goal is normally to teach and refine specific Yoga practices.

❤Yoga Therapist’s Approach:
A Yoga therapist works closely with clients to develop individualised programs that address the specific needs of the client. To do this they develop a professional therapeutic relationship with their clients. They also undertake a comprehensive, holistic assessment of the client’s circumstances prior to developing a personalised practice. They might work alongside medical professionals or in clinical settings.

The Yoga therapist designs unique programs that are client focused. The Yoga therapist does not rely on generalised sequences that may be found online or in books.

This tailored, individualised care marks a significant difference between a Yoga therapist and a Yoga teacher.
