As promised here are some photos of guests and junior chefs at the school's parent/carer lunch on Wednesday. Thank you for all of the lovely comments we have received and it looks as though it will be an annual event!

Our Grade 4/5/6 students have been cooking a variety of delicious food using ingredients from the school's garden over the last five weeks in preparation for today's parents/carers luncheon at the school. They were extremely enthusiastic and worked together well to create spinach & chicken dumplings, lasagne, zucchini & bacon slice, mini cheesecakes and chocolate beetroot muffins. Each student had a least one person attend the luncheon and was their waiter for the day. Students entertained guests with 'Waiter waiter' jokes in between courses and shared messages saying what they appreciated most about their parents on i-pads during the meal. Special thanks to P&C President Jed Elmer who helped Chappy Ronnie in the kitchen,Tangles for his assistance with setting up and Mrs Dargusch & Mrs Lane who helped with washing up at the end. This week we received our 3 Vegepods that were purchased through the Woolworths Junior Landcare grant. A big thank you to Kai and Finn who helped in the initial stages of putting the first one together and to Michael White who finished the job. Our KindyLinQ children will be able to watch and learn how things grow in the Vegepod near the library and the other 2 Vegepods will be used for veggies for our tuckshop.

We are very excited to announce that our school is the recipient of a Woolworths Junior Landcare Grant of $1,500 that will purchase 3 portable vegepods and a native bee hive. Over the holidays the garden will be revamped by the school's groundsman Michael White with the refurbishment of our 6 existing garden beds and 3 new in-ground garden beds. So Term 3 will see lots of veggies planted ready to harvest in Term 4 and be used in cooking classes.

Lots happening in the garden this week. We traded a heap of the large pots that have been sitting near the greenhouse for years for some lovely healthy plants from a roadside stand at the Palms - paw paws, cavendish and lady finger bananas, herbs, rhubarb, tomatoes and eggplants. Rosellas have just gone in - we had rosellas in the garden a few years ago and students loved to eat the sour leaves which can be used in salads and of course jam and cordial made from the fruit. The plants in our shadehouse are growing well with small capsicums and tomatoes well on the way. 3 mulberry trees will be added soon. Come and check out the garden when you are dropping the children off! Garden club will be starting next week at second break on Tuesdays and Thursdays for interested students.

It has been great to be back in the garden over the last two weeks. The covered garden beds are just the thing for planting out veggies during the heat of summer - we now have capsicum, tomatoes, lettuces, herbs, squash, cucumbers and snap beans in the ground. If anyone has seedlings or garden tools they would like to donate, please drop them at the school. We also planted Malabar spinach cuttings along each side of the tunnel. This spinach is actually an edible perennial vine found in tropical Asia and Africa where it is widely used as a leaf vegetable and grows at an incredible rate. If you have never eaten Malabar spinach, you will find that it has a mild peppery flavor and makes good substitute for regular spinach and can be eaten in salads, stir fries or soups. It’s also an easy vegetable to grab a few leaves and toss into a shake. Malabar spinach is high in vitamin A, vitamin C, iron, and calcium. If you would like any cuttings, please let me know.

Chappy Ronnie here - I am so happy to be coming back to my favourite school again this year and getting the garden back on track. Well done Ziggy and others who have kept it going. Hopefully every student will get the chance to grow some wonderful food this year!

Exciting start to the term with a visit from Costa. Enthusiastic and engaging as usual. The children were captivated and we learnt a lot that could be implemented in the school garden. Costa presented plants such as blue berries and a finger lime that were planted on the day. He also left us with the cutest little “cupcake succulents” that now have pride of place in the office.

Our garden is looking fantastic even though there has been little rain and our rainwater tank is dry! Thank you to Deb & Jen for all of your hard work and new watering volunteers Ann & Ziggy who have put their hand up to help out until we get some rain. This beautiful butterfly visited our garden last week - if anyone knows what type it is, please let us know! It is the same butterfly from different angles.

Happy Winter Solstice! Have you planted garlic in your garden this year? If you haven't planted any yet, make sure you get it in this week.
