Grades 4 to 6 have been reading the book Storm Boy by Colin Thiele. This story is set in Coorong National Park in South Australia. Students have been learning to write an information report and researching life in Coorong National Park. It has been discovered that Bailey has a family heritage in this place. Bailey’s great grandfather lived in Coorong National Park. She has brought in artefacts, photos and newspaper articles which discussed in detail her great grandfather‘s life and Coorong National Park. Students were engaged as they made connections from Storm Boy with the real-life information even including articles from when Storm Boy was written. We shared stories, looked at photos, observed maps and were able to enjoy in-depth discussions covering a range of topics. It was fantastic to have this resource, and we are very grateful for Bailey sharing this with us.
