The NSW Department of Education's guidance on starting school doesn't mention flashcards, worksheets, or early reading levels.

It talks about routine. Independence. Being able to manage a lunchbox, a toilet break, a raised hand.

That lines up exactly with what we've seen over two decades in early childhood classrooms. Academic skills matter, and they'll come. But the children who settle in fastest are the ones who can already do the everyday things for themselves.

Term 4 enrolments are filling fast!

Is your child starting school in 2027 or 2028?
You don’t need to wait until the year before school to start building the foundations. Our small group sessions, led by experienced teachers, help children grow the confidence, skills and independence to walk through the school gate feeling ready.

We cover the whole child, not just the report card:
📚 Early literacy, phonics and numeracy
✏️ Handwriting and fine motor skills
🧠 Listening and following instructions
🤝 Making friends and working in a group
💛 Managing big feelings and asking for help
🌟 Independence and confidence

Starting early gives children time to learn, practise and grow without the pressure of school being just around the corner.

Between 8am drop offs, meetings, and dinner at 6, most parents don't have hours a week to spend on "school prep."

Here's the truth from two educators who've watched this transition from both sides of the classroom door: you don't need more hours. You need the right ten minutes.

Starting school is a huge milestone, and it can feel like it comes around far too quickly.

Those little moments of confidence, independence and “I can do it!” make such a difference when children walk into the classroom for the first time.

At Set for School, we help children build the skills they need to feel confident and ready for school, from early literacy and numeracy to handwriting, fine motor skills, listening, turn-taking and independence.

And because we work in small groups, we can get to know each child and support the areas they need most.

Term 4 enrolments are filling quickly, with limited spots remaining in our new Monday and Friday classes.

If your little one is starting school soon, Term 4 is a great time to build those foundations and help them feel ready for what’s ahead.

We’re looking for a warm, patient and reliable tutor to provide one-on-one tutoring for primary-aged children, helping them strengthen their skills, close learning gaps and feel more confident in themselves. 🤍

🌟Our Week 2 Spring Holiday Program is here!
Keep the learning going these school holidays with fun, engaging sessions designed specifically for each stage of your child’s learning journey.

Tuesday: School Readiness Intensive
Wednesday: Kindy & Year 1 Foundation Club
Thursday: School Readiness Intensive
Friday: Year 2 & Year 3 Story Studio
Each session runs from 9:00am–12:00pm and is designed to build confidence, strengthen key skills and keep children learning while having fun.

Places are limited, so we encourage families to enrol early to secure your child’s spot. Sessions require a minimum of 4 children to run.

1:1 sessions are also available upon request.

We’re excited to announce two new school readiness sessions at Set for School!
Our small-group sessions are designed to help children build the skills, confidence and independence they need to feel ready for starting school, all while learning through fun, hands-on activities.

A parent asked us last week if their child was "behind" because their pencil grip still looked shaky. Our answer: no. Every child develops fine motor skills at their own pace, and that's exactly why we build it into every session, alongside the confidence to keep trying.

I’ve stopped letting my 3-year-old win 😂

We play Trouble and Uno together, and as tempting as it is to let Archie win every time… I don’t.

Because losing is actually teaching him something.

How to feel disappointed.
How to manage the frustration.
How to try again.
How to realise things won’t always go his way.

And as Emma & Susan from Pre-K School Readiness Classes and Primary Tutoring Sydney explained, resilience is a learned skill.

We don’t need to remove every hard feeling for our kids.

Sometimes we need to give them a safe place to experience it and learn:

“That sucked… but I’m okay. Let’s try again.”

Such a simple thing we can start teaching them long before their first day of school.
