Last Friday, 21 August, we were very excited to officially celebrate the Grand Opening of the new Queanbeyan South Public School Preschool! It was a wonderful morning shared with our preschool children, staff and special guests, including Aunty Matilda and Steve Whan MP, Member for Monaro. Our children were so excited to be part of the celebrations and help mark such a special milestone for our school community. We are incredibly proud of our beautiful new preschool and look forward to all the learning, friendships and special memories that will be made here for many years to come.

📚 Book Week 2026 – Charmaine Ledden-Lewis

On Monday, QSPS students were lucky enough to meet the incredibly talented author and illustrator Charmaine Ledden-Lewis as part of our Book Week celebrations.

Charmaine is a proud Bundjalung woman living on Dharug and Gundungurra Country in the Blue Mountains. She shared her love of drawing and talked to students about how illustrations can tell a story, even without words.

Students loved seeing examples of Charmaine’s artwork and learning about how she develops her illustrations for books. They were particularly interested to hear that authors sometimes change their minds about what they want in a picture, meaning Charmaine sometimes has to start an illustration all over again!

The visit was especially meaningful for our Stage 1 students, who have recently spent two weeks studying Charmaine’s book Born to Run. They were fascinated to learn that the cover they know today wasn't the original cover and that Cathy Freeman loved the illustrations of herself as a young girl so much that the cover was changed.

The highlight for many students was watching Charmaine create a beautiful sunset using soft pastels in just five minutes. They were completely absorbed as they watched her work.

Charmaine left students with a lovely message, illustrations can tell a story regardless of the language you speak.

A big thank you to Mrs Garner for continuing to find such wonderful ways to connect our students with authors, illustrators and the world of books. 📖🎨

WOW! What an amazing morning we had today celebrating Book Week 2026! 🎶📖

Our school was filled with incredible costumes, favourite characters, creativity and, of course, a whole lot of love for books! ❤️

A huge thank you to Mrs Garner for putting together such a fantastic Book Week celebration. We are so lucky to have someone who brings so much creativity and fun to our school community! 👏💫
