This morning we joined Claire at Play to Learn Playgroup to celebrate National Children’s Week!

The theme for 2022 is based on Article 27 of the UN Convention of the Rights of the Child: You have the right to food, clothing, a safe place to live and to have your basic needs met. You should not be disadvantaged so that you can’t do many of the things other kids can do.

We know that we each have something different to contribute in group contexts, but know each of our experiences are worthy. We belong here!

Sometimes we don’t quite know the production, equipment or time the products we have available to us go through before they get to us.

Take orange juice for example.

I: “It has a orange label in a bottle and we buy it from the shop on the weekend!”

🍊 But what is actually involved in the process?
🍊How many oranges does it take to make 200ml of orange juice?
🍊How do we get the juice out of the orange itself?
🍊What portion size is best for squeezing?
🍊Is there a technique to squeeze?
🍊What utencils/equipment do we need?

Being contributing citizens today looked like this. Orchestrating the collection of a large piece of plastic that had blown out of a skip. When we saw it, it was tumbling down the road.

The children instigated the safe collection by assessing risk and discussing potential safety concerns. Once collected, we carried it home to dispose of correctly.

We talked about how it was a soft plastic, however it was unfortunately slightly soiled by its previous food contexts. We placed it in our red bin when we arrived home!

“Off to the big hole in the ground!” M said. As she understands it’s final and sad destination!

What lies beneath the surface of a puddle that’s been disturbed. Squelchy mud that squishes between fingers and covers skin. It’s cool to touch and as it dries it’s gritty!
