Holding this grinding stone in my hands reminds me that our people were never “primitive” — we were innovative, knowledgeable and deeply connected to Country.
As a Gamilaroi woman, it’s powerful to remember that our Yinarr were renowned bread makers. For thousands of years our old people harvested native grains, winnowed seed, ground flour on stone and baked bread long before colonisation.
Our breads and grains were traded with neighbouring tribes, showing the sophistication of our knowledge systems, trade and food practices across this continent.
Every grind of the stone carries patience, skill and story. You can almost feel the presence of our old people teaching, preparing food together and ensuring the next generation knew how to survive and thrive from Country.
This is more than a stone. It is memory. It is survival. It is the continuation of culture. 🖤🔥🤎
