🥋 Karate Festival 2026 🥋

Thank you everyone for your hard work today!
We had 35 participating in sparring — 8 from Senjo Dojo - Kyokushin Karate- Field Dojo, 8 from Cannonvale Kyokushin Karate Club Inc., and 19 from our dojo.

For many of the students, this was their first time stepping onto the mat to sparring with someone in an event like this. It takes a lot of courage to overcome the nerves and the feeling of wanting to run away, and getting onto the mat and giving it a go today was a FANTASTIC first step.🏅🎉
It’s not just about winning or losing.
After each sparring session, think about:
“Was I able to do what I have been practising in class?”
Reflecting on this will help you improve and take the next step forward. Let’s keep training hard when we return to the dojo!

I also had the opportunity to experience being a Referee today. I usually work as a corner referee(flag), but this time I challenged myself to be the center Referee.
Seeing the fight from the center referee’s perspective gave me a different understanding of what is required from the corner referee. Instead of focusing on one particular point, I needed to watch the whole fight and make quick decisions. Of course, I made some mistakes and missed some things, but it was a great learning experience for me too. I’m sure I’ll DO BETTER next time!🔥

Today was a valuable learning experience not only for me, but for all of our students and everyone who participated.
A big thank you to Hanshi Trevor and the Senjo Dojo team from Mackay for travelling, and to Sensei Belinda, Sempai Dallas, all the students and parents from Cannonvale. We really appreciate you coming and supporting the event.
And a huge thank you to everyone from Proserpine who helped with cleaning and setting up the dojo yesterday, the BBQ today, and the clean-up afterwards. We couldn’t have done it without everyone’s help. Thank you, and great work everyone!
Now, let’s get back to training and keep working hard from next week!

🔱 FAMILY SPOTLIGHT 🔱 – Pomeroy's –
The Pomeroy's has been part of our dojo community since 2021.
Whenever the dojo holds an event or needs a helping hand, they are always willing to get involved and support ✊ Their enthusiasm and support make them a valued part of our dojo family😊

❓ Why did you start karate?🥋
Bill) I started when I was 6 I wanted to try something new and something exciting.
Emily) I started 3 months after the kids started it looked like too much fun and great exercise. Where else can I train with my kids
and participate in the same sport at the same time. Bill got us all hooked because only few months later Dan joined too making it a whole family affair.

❓What made your family choose Whitsunday Kyokushin karate?
We loved the idea of karate. And we had heard many tales of the local legend Shihan Wayne Hinschen. We knew training under Shihan would give us invaluable fighting and tournament knowledge.

❓What do you enjoy most about karate?🥋
Bill) I enjoy the tournaments the most. I love training hard and pushing myself in training to become a better fighter. My ultimate goal is to become a World Champion in Kyokushin Karate. When I'm older I really want to become an uchi deshi and live and train in Japan and also I want to one day complete the 100 man kumite.

🥇 From the Family -
We are a karate family we love to train and travel to tournaments to compete. We have all competed in our local South Pacific Championships, traveled to Cairns, Sydney and Melbourne. We love representing Proserpine against the big dojos in the big cities. Even though Bill is usually the instigator to travel and compete mum and dad also end up competing.
We are currently training with the hope of traveling to Japan next year to compete in a tournament there.
Tobias still enjoys the fitness aspect of karate but has now stepped away from competitions and Olivia has moved into netball her sporting interest. Family member has found their own sporting path, and we continue to support and encourage one another along the way. 🥋
Outside of karate, we love spending time together as a family, especially fishing and exploring the Whitsundays.🌴⛵️😊

➡️Thank you for sharing your family story, Emily.
Every family member may follow a different path, but the support they share along the way is what makes our dojo community special. 🥋

It’s time to pass the spotlight to the next family! (Updated irregularly)

🚫Entry due = 15th August
Attendances - MUST entry from HERE

This event is especially recommended for students with white and orange belts, as well as anyone who has never competed before.
Kyokushin Karate is a full-contact, kumite-based style of karate. Before entering major tournaments or championship events, gaining experience in a practice tournament like this is a great way to become familiar with the competition environment and rules.
Winning or losing isn’t the most important thing. The main goal is simply to gain valuable competition experience.

Benefits of participating:
* Learn how a tournament runs
* Experience the excitement and pressure of competition
* Put the rules into practice in a real match

🔱 FAMILY SPOTLIGHT 🔱 – Ricky's FAMILY –

Ricky (2nd Kyu) and his son Noah (4th Kyu, 11yo) have been training together for five years. Their enthusiasm and willingness to challenge themselves inspire those around them. They are dedicated members with excellent attendance, and their positive energy always lifts the atmosphere in the dojo. Behind them is 🇯🇵Tomo, whose constant support makes their karate journey possible.

❓ Why did you start karate?🥋
Noah) Because my mum introduced me to train karate
Ricky) After watching my son's training a few times, it looked fun and I wanted to challenge myself.

❓ What do you enjoy most about training?
Noah) Love the fitness and meeting up with friends👦
Ricky) Seeing the results after hard training, feeling stronger and learning new techniques💪

❓ What has been the biggest challenge for you?🎯
Noah) Sparring with big and heavy partners
Ricky) Pushing through hard training. It isn't easy but it's about challenging yourself and becoming stronger

❓What are your future goals in karate or life ?
Noah) Winning more and more tournaments and getting stronger.
I also love playing chess and one day I want to be a chess ♟️ grandmaster. To the new students, Keep training hard and don't give up!!
Ricky) I went to see how far I can go. If I can achieve black belt, that'd be great but I know it's something that needs to be earned.
I just want to keep training and be an inspiration for my son.

❓What positive changes have you noticed in your child ?
Tomo) While he may be smaller than other children his age, he has developed remarkable physical and mental strength through training and is growing into a resilient young boy

🐸 From Parents (Ricky & Tomo)
Karate has been a part of Noah’s life since he was six years old. Like every child, there were times when he wanted to quit or didn't feel like going to training. During those moments, we encouraged him to keep going because learning to persevere is one of life's greatest lessons.
Karate has helped him grow stronger, not only physically but also mentally. More importantly, this dojo is truly exceptional. We are deeply grateful to the Shihan, Sensei and sempai who dedicate so much of their time and energy to supporting every student. Their guidance, patience, and genuine care have made a lasting difference in our son's life.
The dojo is also filled with wonderful families who encourage and support one another. It wouldn't be an exaggeration to say that this dojo is the reason we continue to live in Proserpine.
Thank you to everyone who has helped our son grow over the years. We are proud and grateful to be part
of this amazing dojo family.✨✨

➡️Thank you for wonderful words Ricky & Tomo. Karate isn't just about individual growth—it's a journey families can share together.🤝
It’s time to pass the spotlight to the next family 🥋✨
