Here’s the secret of our club: half the gold you take home comes from the speeches you hear. We arrive to practise talking and leave as world-class listeners. Somewhere between the table topics and the evaluations, you pick up a phrase, a pause, a clever way to handle a tough question... and suddenly you’re using those tricks in the boardroom, the coffee queue and that awkward family dinner.

Active listening: the communication superpower nobody signs up for and everybody walks away with.

No wetsuit, no safety line, just the nerve to plunge in.

Our Table Topics segment on Wednesday is the chance to practice thinking on your feet. The challenge is to respond effectively in the moment to a question you aren’t prepared for.
So, Stay Calm and Breathe
• Take a slow breath before you speak.
• Pause for a second to gather your thoughts.
• A short silence makes you look calm and smart.
• Admit if you do not know the exact answer.
• Share what you know from past experience.
• Pivot to what you do know
