The Young Endeavour Youth Scheme provides young Australians with a unique, challenging and inspirational experience at sea. Our voyages increase self awareness, develop teamwork and leadership skills and create a strong sense of community responsibility amongst members of the youth crew. The Scheme began when the magnificent sail training ship STS Young Endeavour was given to the people of Austral

ia by the United Kingdom as a Bicentennial gift back in 1988. Since then, the Scheme, in partnership with the Australian Government and the Royal Australian Navy, has provided challenging training voyages for more than 14,000 young Australians aboard Young Endeavour. Young Endeavour undertakes around 20 voyages each year, mostly along the east and south coasts of Australia. Each voyage we embark 24 young Australians - the youth crew - and nine specially trained Royal Australian Navy crew, usually for an eleven day adventure at sea. To sail in Young Endeavour apply for our ballot (which is like a lottery). The ballot opens twice each year, in January and August - you've got to be in it to have a chance to sail!

⚓️Captains Log V13/26 - Day 2

Hi Everyone, welcome to Day 2 of our Voyage. Our Young Mariners awoke to an overcast morning with a few passing showers. Despite the weather we still kicked of the morning with an Early Morning Activity (EMA) at 0630 which consisted of a few laps of Young Endeavours deck followed by a getting to know you exercise run by Dion our amazing Sail Master.

Breakfast and Morning Brief followed, then Dion got everyone back on deck in their harnesses where Sam gave a comprehensive climbing brief before everyone completed first climbs of the foremast. This activity took the rest of the morning which to be honest was expected as it can be quite challenging for those that are not comfortable with heights.

Following another one of Vinnies delicious lunches, our Young Mariners were back on deck learning deck safety and how to set and furl sails. During this time the weather improved, and it became quite warm, so we decided to give everyone a quick swim in the clear waters of Moreton Bay before weighing anchor.

At 1545, we weighed anchor and commenced our long pilotage out of Moreton Bay. During this pilotage, the Youth Crew spent time with Dion who took them through the theory of Tacking/Wearing Ship and a sail setting & furling demonstration by the Staff Crew which were the final activities of the afternoon.

The time is now 2000, and we have just about made it out Moreton Bay. It really has been a busy day, but we have achieved everything that we wanted to which is extremely pleasing and it has set us up well for the next couple of days of the voyage.

⚓️Captains Log V13/26 - Day 1

Hi Everyone, welcome to another exciting voyage with Young Endeavour. As you know, our last voyage took us from Sydney to Brisbane and this one will take us back to Sydney which is fine by us as we love sailing this stretch of the Australian Coast and are super excited to have a new Youth Crew onboard to experience this adventure with us. As normal, we have put together another great Staff Crew for this voyage who I know will take great care of our new Youth Crew, ensuring that they all have a wonderful experience.

The voyage commenced at 1500 today when the new Youth Crew joined Young Endeavour berthed at Dockside Marina, which is at Kangaroo Point and very close to Story Bridge. Once we had everyone on board and gear stowed, we mustered our new Youth Crew with a large group of family and friends up on deck where I gave my welcome address followed by Staff Crew introductions. On completion, we farewelled family and friends then got straight into a safety brief. At 1605, we departed our berth and commenced our long pilotage down the Brisbane River and out into Moreton Baying. During this passage, the Watch Leaders conducted some ‘Ice Breaker’ activities and Ships Tours.

Dinner followed, with tonight’s menu featuring roast lamb, gourmet sausages, and a wonderful chicken dish I could not pronounce, all served with vegetables or salad and followed by a wonderful selection of desserts. After cleaning up, I delivered my Captain’s Brief, followed by Dion’s Sail Master chat. With those briefings complete, we then went into a comprehensive demonstration on the use of the Ships safety equipment before coming safely to anchor at Moreton Islands, Tangalooma at 2040. Once at anchor Sam gave the harness brief then the Watch Leaders spent time with their watches completing Full Value Contracts which was the final activity for the day. After a busy start to the voyage, we are now ready to turn-in for a good night’s sleep.

Tomorrow morning, we plan to conduct our first climbs of the foremast before departing our anchorage and commencing the 3hr pilotage out of Moreton Bay.

Sail Training Ship (STS) Young Endeavour (II) is one step closer to inspiring the next generation of Australians at sea.

On 7 August, a ceremony to celebrate major milestones of launch and mast placement was held at Birdon’s shipyard in Port Macquarie. Commemorative coins were placed beneath the 3 masts to mark continued progress in the construction of the new training ship.

Once complete, STS Young Endeavour (II) will expand opportunities for young Australians, increasing capacity from 27 to 42 crew per voyage and enabling up to 3 additional voyages each year.

Don't forget to come and Visit Australia’s national sail training ship, STS Young Endeavour, in Brisbane!

Since 1988, the ship has welcomed over 15,000 young Australians on board and sailed more than 500,000 nautical miles. A voyage in Young Endeavour is a challenging adventure at sea for youth aged 16-23 years. It’s a unique opportunity for youth to develop teamwork and leadership skills through an internationally recognised youth development program.

⚓️Captains Log V12/26 - Day 10

Hi Everyone, welcome to Day 10 and the final Day of our Voyage. Following a peaceful night at anchor at Mud Island; the Youth Crew awoke to a fine Moreton Bay morning.

At 0700, we weighed anchor then proceeded over to the entry to the Brisbane River only to be told that we would have to wait for a large containership to move of its berth and clear the Brisbane River Channel before we could enter. Frustratingly, this took about 40min which put us behind our schedule, but we still managed to make up time and berth at Rivergate just before 1000. By then our Community Day guests had arrived so we got them straight onboard where I gave my welcome address followed by our safety briefs. Once completed, we cast-off lines, departed our berth then spent the next 3 hours giving our guests a memorable tour of the Brisbane River.

By 1330, we were back alongside and once our guests were farewelled the Youth Crew went ashore and spent time with their Watch Leaders conducting End of Voyage Chats followed by some ball games. Once completed, they returned onboard where they enjoyed a sunset pizza dinner (thanks Chef Vinnie) before putting on harnesses and going aloft to put Harbour Furls on the Squares (very need furls of the sails). The rest of the evening will be spent with the Youth Crew completing Voyage Critiques and writing letters to themselves which will be returned to them in 6mths time.

Tomorrow morning, we will depart our berth and transit up the Brisbane River where we will berth at Dockside Marina at 1000. Once alongside we will invite family and friends onboard to tour the ship and witness my presentation of Certificates of Achievement to all of the Youth Crew before saying our final goodbye’s

This has been another great voyage, and I would like to thank the Youth Crew for all the effort you put in throughout the voyage, you are a wonderful group of young Australians, and the Staff Crew wish you all the best for the future.

Young Endeavour will remain alongside Dockside Marina until 25 August 26 when we will embark the Youth Crew for Voyage 13-26 which will be from Brisbane to Sydney.

We will also be open to the public from 1000-1500 on Saturday 22 August 26, so if you’re in Brisbane drop down and meet the Crew and have a look at this wonderful Ship.
