👏 A big thank you to Nikia, Mickayla, and Byron from Macquarie Hastings Council for visiting SJRC to speak with students about apprenticeship, traineeship, and cadetship opportunities.
Students gained valuable insights into the application process, qualification expectations, and heard inspiring career journeys from Byron (Tradesman Fitter) and Mickayla (Environmental Engineer).

AAA
We continue our AAA program (Ask an Alumni) with a presentation from former student James Merkus who graduated in 2024. James was an outstanding Engineering Studies student, and today he returned to St Joseph's Regional College to address current Year 11 and Year 12 Engineering Studies students about the course he is undertaking. James is enrolled in the prestigious Charles Sturt University Bachelor of Engineering (Hons), based at the Bathurst campus. He has selected a major in Mechanical Engineering, and today his address included relevant information about the course itself, living in Bathurst, the university, accommodation, his experience, and his aspirations. The course is unique in that students spend 2 years on campus, and then 2 years in a paid cadetship, which could be anywhere in the state.

We are so grateful to these alumni who return to the college to share their experiences. Many thanks James.

The start of our new event in study lessons.
A huge thank you to the wonderful Mia McCullough and Annie Mepham for taking time out of their busy schedules to kick off our AAA sessions.
Mia is a successful NSW police force applicant who is currently working through the process at the police academy in Goulburn. Her knowledge and insight into the process was invaluable.
Annie is in her first year of a Bachelor of Speech Pathology at SCU Coffs Harbour. Her wisdom and enthusiasm for this degree gave an exciting snapshot into a very interesting future career.

After graduating from St Joseph’s Regional College in 2020, Jessica commenced a Bachelor of Veterinary Technology at Charles Sturt University, but then transferred to a Bachelor of Environmental Science, graduating in 2024 with a Major in Ecology & Conservation.
Jessica grew up on a farm west of Wauchope, which may have contributed to her love for the environment, nature and animals. “I love the environment, nature and animals. I completed a year of Veterinary Technology before deciding it wasn’t for me and then I connected with Environmental Science. The field of study enabled me to grow my knowledge of the environment and connect for my surroundings at a deeper level. I feel it is important as the environment is a continuously changing and growing. Combining innovative ideas with the changing environment is occurring daily and will continue in the future”.

Congratulations to the following Year 11 students Phoebe White, Dane Bittu, Kailus Nath Praveen Remya, Jack Duff and Darryl Bijoy who have been selected to attend the prestigious University of Sydney Year 11 residential program in the September/October holiday. They will attend on campus for a week to have an immersive experience to explore the University of Sydney through a range of faculty workshops, accommodation tours, in-depth admission sessions and gain an exciting snapshot of student life.

Congratulations on your successful applications and we look forward to hearing about the experience on your return in Term 4.

UNSW Engineering Year 10 Work Experience
Earlier this year, we shared the exciting news that our Year 10 student, Cassandra Hill, participated in the prestigious Engineering Work Experience Program at the University of New South Wales UNSW Engineering. We’re now thrilled to announce that Cass has been recognised as one of the top 30 students in the program for submitting one of the 'most noteworthy Civil Engineering Reports'.
This is a remarkable achievement, and we are incredibly proud of her. Congratulations, Cass — we look forward to seeing all the amazing things your future holds!

On Thursday, our Year 11 students travelled to Taree to attend CareerQuip. This event is targeted to our Year 11 students in that there is a broad cross-section of exhibitors available to disseminate career and employment information. These include over 50 exhibitors, including National Association of Prospective Student Advisers members such as universities, private and vocational colleges and student support services. Additionally, TAFE and employer organisations were also represented along with local and regional skills shortage employers, plus trades and vocations. What an amazing opportunity for our students to engage with their futures.

Thanks to the team from University of Sydney – Chelsea, Ahmed and Ava who delivered a very comprehensive presentation to interested students in Years 11 and 12 on Tuesday. Topics included pathways to University of Sydney, scholarships available, application processes, residential options and more. They then followed with an informative session for Year 10 students about university life and Year 10 were encouraged to explore the links between personal interest and skills, senior high school subjects and higher education using the MyFuture website. They also learnt about available study options and future career paths at the University of Sydney. The session had a focus on what university is, why people choose to study there and understanding university terminology, including prerequisites, and assumed knowledge to help with year 11 and 12 subject selection. After graduating from St Joseph's Regional College in 2017, Tatiana commenced a Bachelor of Occupational Therapy at Charles Sturt University in Port Macquarie. After two years, she transferred to JCU: James Cook University, Australia where she was selected to be one of only three students to engage in a Research Honours program embedded in the OT degree. In 2024, she was awarded the Bachelor of Occupational Therapy (Honours IIA). As one of a family of deeply committed individuals, Tatiana sees her future lying in the areas of service and compassion. With parents who are both teachers, and elder siblings involved in the arts, teaching and health, Tatiana is a strong example of someone who is geared to ‘give’. Her family values cross-cultural exposure and intercultural collaboration and learning, so when asked what she loves about her field of study, Tatiana’s response was:
‘Occupational Therapy and Occupational Science are fields that look at what people DO. They are (we are) interested in why and how people do what they do. In understanding these foundations, we can support people to engage in activities and tasks that are deeply meaningful or important in their lives. Often after an injury or during an illness people’s capacity to engage with their day to day lives are altered, but their ‘why’ remains important. It is in this space that OTs work. Analysing the persons’ skills and capabilities, their environment, and the occupation itself, we can create a plan to get them back to engagement albeit in often different forms. I have been engaged in occupational Science research in the past 2 years exploring how the lived experiences, of children who grow up in multicultural environments, go on to impact the way they engage with the world in Adulthood and the way they see themselves in relation to engagement. It is my privilege as an Occupational Therapist to see people, at their most vulnerable, as people of value and capacity, and provide for them reassurance that even if their life has changed and the way they engage with them world may be different, it can still have meaning and we can find a way that works for them.’
With significant personal challenges including dyslexia and mental health, Tatiana embodies the journey of someone with a goal, and the wisdom to seek support when needed. Congratulations Tatiana. Your post-school journey is exceptional. We are so proud of you. https://onpurposetherapy.com.au/
