Announcing the nest in the U3A Speaker series. In this, Andrew Lang will talk about bioenergy technologies, our sustainable biomass feedstocks, how other countries have developed bioenergy, and what the potential is for Australia.
Biomass is the largest source of renewable energy across the EU, and worldwide, providing more renewable energy consumed than all other renewable energy sources together. As well as being a source of power-on-demand, biomass provides industrial/urban heat and transport biofuels.
Andrew Lang is a farmer and farm forester in south west Victoria, and a Churchill and Gottstein Fellow. His expertise covers farm forestry establishment, management and harvest, the economics and logistics of biomass supply, and all technologies of biomass-to-energy and waste-to-energy. He was involved in the Beaufort hospital project replacing LPG with sawmill residues for producing all hospital heat, and most recently with the Skipton hospital biomass-to-heat system. He was president of the Victorian Bioenergy Network until 2023.
While being a board member of the World Bioenergy Association from 2008-2018 he gained knowledge of wind power, solar PV, solar heat, geothermal and hydro sources of energy, as well as energy from municipal solid waste.
