The most amazing week of the year is just around the corner - BOOK WEEK!!!

Across the week we will be running a range of activities for our students and families. Starting Monday, students who would like to participate shall be given a booklet to complete a range of activities including colouring in, wordsearches, matching teachers to their favourite book characters and to top it off - treasure hunts. It will be an entire symphony of activities for our kids! Our wonderful P&C will also be helping out by giving prizes and vouchers out to some lucky students.

Parents and family members are also going to get in on the fun with classrooms opening up for you to come and see some of the amazing art and work that students have been doing this year. Check with your classroom teacher what mornings and afternoons they will have the classroom open up during the week to come and see some excellent and amazing work.

The big finale will be our book week parade on Friday morning in the cyclone shelter at 9:15am. All classrooms will be open before hand from 8:30-9:00am so head up to see some amazing costumes and a celebration of books after seeing your child's work in the classroom.

After the parade, our P&C have organised a book swap where families and students are invited to take a donated book home to keep. We are still looking for donations so please drop off any unwanted books you have to the office throughout the week. Your unwanted book could be music to someone else's ears!

Happy reading everyone!!!!

PBL FOCUS
Mr Zahnow spoke about our PBL focus "The Environment”.
Caring for the environment is everyone’s job. The responsibility is ours to keep our environment safe. He spoke about ways our students can help our school environment, such as putting rubbish in the bins, and taking care of our gardens and areas such as the butterfly garden.
He reminded students that they must walk through the pathways, and not the garden and bushes.

REEF GUARDIANS
Our Reef Guardians Emma, Annika and Lilly chatted about environmental facts and Miss Charlotte thanked the rubbish collectors from Week 5 and presented them with their certificates.

PRINCIPAL'S ADDRESS
Mr Barnes congratulated the students in year 4 and year 6 who challenged themselves at camp last week and had a great time.

Our winners from the Science poster competition were –
Lower years – Beau, Middle years – tie between Allianna and Millie and Upper years – Lilly D and Sophie B (see pic).
What fun it was to watch the slime be poured over Mr Zahnow – there were so many laughs and excitement in the crowd.

PBL FOCUS
Mr Zahnow spoke about our PBL focus "Keep all hands, feet and objects to ourselves”
What are some of the ways that we can be safe?
- Use mindfulness to be aware of how we are feeling in certain situations.
- Practice and use strategies to deal with anger and frustration instead of hitting.
- Communicating our needs clearly to others including our personal space.
- Practicing empathy to understand how others might feel in certain situations

REEF GUARDIANS
Our Reef Guardians Annika, Evie and Emma told environmental facts including humpback whales and their migration, and that according to the Australian Institute of Marine Science (AIMS), half of the Great Barrier Reef disappeared in the past 30 years.
Miss Charlotte thanked the rubbish collectors from Week 4 with a certificate.
Thank you to the students who completed a “Living with Science” poster, ready to be judged to see who will be the lucky students who get to slime Mr Zahnow next week at Parade! These are on display in the library.

PRINCIPAL'S ADDRESS
Mr Zahnow explained that the school will look a bit different this week – with both Grade 4 classes away at camp at Innisfail Monday – Wednesday. Grade 6 district cluster camp starts Tuesday – Friday, at Tinaroo.
Mr Barnes is attending both camps this week – and we have other staff attending camps and away, so there will be some changes in classes.

Well done to Chris, who broke a TCN record, clearing 1.34m in high jump!

PBL FOCUS

REEF GUARDIANS
Our Reef Guardians Annika, Lily and Emma told us environmental facts and Miss Charlotte thanked the rubbish collectors from Week 3 with a certificate.
We have reached $300 in our containers for change collection. Well done – keep it up! If you need a white bag to take home, please see Miss Charlotte or a reef guardian.
Science Week is coming up in week 6. Science on the Oval is Thursday August 20th 9-11am.
There will be a competition to smile Mr Zahnow at the Parade on Monday Week 6.
Students can create a poster about “Living with Science” and submit it to their teachers or Miss Charlotte BY THIS FRIDAY. The winners will be able to slime Mr Zahnow!

ACCOUNCEMENTS
TAG RULES- Mr Zahnow announced that there is rule change for TAG games at playtime. Ghost tag now counts as a tag. So if a student gets tagged on their shirt and doesn’t feel it – it does now count. This is a reminder that students need to be honest and responsible.

CHEER- Ava and Aria are running a cheer leading session for grade 5&6 students on Monday first break on the oval.

SPORT TRAINING- Alba and Maisey said training days for this week are:
Monday 1st play students born in 2017

PBL FOCUS
This week our PBL focus is “Walking on concrete”. Mr Zahnow reminded students that we have a very important school rule, to walk on the concrete. We have had many near misses, and clashes with students who are rushing and running on concrete areas and pathways.
Remember, tag games are only for open spaces, such as the ovals – and not between classrooms and walkways.
Let’s all focus on being safe at PDSS and remember to slow down and walk on concrete.

Thanks to Lily, Evie and Jordan for teaching us facts about the environment.
Miss Charlotte thanked our rubbish collectors from last week – pictured are Layla, Anaisha, Millie, Scout and Gabi.
