Austrade Study Australia Education Fair Tokyo Japan – Representing Australia and DE International

Honoured to attend and present at the Austrade Study Australia Education Fair in Tokyo Japan representing Australia, DE International - the NSW Department of Education and Plumpton High School with Melissa Ong from DE International to promote Public Education in NSW and Education in Australia.

The Fair was of an exceptional standard, a great tribute to the work and professionalism of the Austrade Education team in Japan Margaret Bowen, General Manager International, North East Asia, Austrade Minister (commercial), Fumi Matsumoto with Saori Tominaga and their incredible team. We were able to gain much from our interactions with parents and their children seeking to secure one of the most treasured things in this world – a great education that sets them up for success for the world at and beyond school.

Thank you to the Tokyo Board of Education for warmly welcoming Melissa and I to discuss education partnership between Tokyo and NSW. This was a wonderful opportunity to continue our learning across education systems and look at new possibilities for partnership and collaboration.

On behalf of Plumpton High School, the NSW Department of Education and personally I would like to express my sincere thanks and gratitude to the Austrade team for their time, expertise, personal touch and incredible support provided to Melissa and I. Thank you also to The NSW Government Investment NSW team Director Reiko Simada, Associate Director Tomohito Tanase and Trade and Investment Commissioner Japana and Republic of Korea David Lawson for their time and expertise prior to the Education Fair in meeting at their office in Tokyo and during the fair.

Plumpton High School Forensic Science High Performing Gifted Education Club Australian Museum Excursion.

Students from Plumpton High School and Plumpton Public School who are part of the Forensic Science High Potential Gifted Education (HPGE) program were able to attend the Australian Museum to further their knowledge in this area.

This program offers the opportunity for students to engage in complex intellectual pursuits with guidance and direction. The High Potential Gifted Education (HPGE) Forensic Science program aims to allow students to delve deeper into the career of a forensic chemist and biologist as well as explore technologies in forensics used in modern society using a STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) approach. Students are engaged in DNA testing with Plumpton having the necessary testing resources and laboratory to undertake this process.

In doing so, they acquire an understanding of scientific investigations, legal proceedings and will debunk myths portrayed in crime shows. This allows students to perceive how a range of different forensic scientists work and how this field has developed over history as well as where it is headed for the future. They analyse the importance of the development of this field to its role in legal proceedings.

The program allows students to explore the idea of forensics from the perspective of the four disciplines of STEM. Looking at the range of divisions of scientists involved in forensic science will give students an understanding of how a crime is solved in the real world in real time. The knowledge that they attain gives students an understanding of a career path in these fields.

This program offers students a high-quality Forensic Science experience with a focus on forensic chemistry, forensic biology and technologies that prepare students for further study in Science (Years 7-10), Chemistry & Biology (Years 11-12). The High Potential Gifted Education Forensic Science program is an exclusive program offered by Plumpton High School and is taught by Ms Reno, a qualified Department of Education Science teacher.

Polish Program Partnering with Findex and The Beacon Foundation

Year 10 Plumpton High School students were fortunate to visit Findex in partnership with the Beacon Foundation to participate in the Polish program.

The High Impact Program Polish is a full day program is a powerful, practical program focused on confidence building. HIP Polish ends with a fun and encouraging ‘mock’ interview session.

Findex is an integrated financial services firm providing a range of accounting, wealth management, tax, and business advisory services to small, medium, and large enterprises and individuals across Australia and New Zealand. The company was founded in 1987 and has grown through strategic acquisitions, including the integration of Centric Wealth and the former Crowe Horwath network and has over 110 offices.

Thank you to Findex and the Beacon Foundation for providing our students this unique opportunity to build the necessary skills they will need to succeed and thrive in the world of tertiary study and employment.

Our Year 8 students had an exciting hands-on learning experience investigating the structure of a Sheep heart through a heart dissection.

This practical activity allowed students to observe the chambers, valves, blood vessels, and muscular walls of the heart up close, helping them develop a deeper understanding of how the circulatory system functions.

Sister School - Takatsuki Kita High School, Osaka, Japan and Plumpton High School

In my recent visit to Japan representing Austrade and the NSW Department of Education with Melissa Ong from DE International I was honoured to meet with the principal and her colleagues and tour our newly commenced Sister School relationship with Takatsuki Kita High School in Osaka.

It is an honour to partner with Takatsuki Kita High School as a sister school relationship and be able to collaborate for the benefit of our students, staff, education and friendship. It was wonderful to meet some of their teachers and leaders - Vice Principal Hidetoshi Sato, English Teacher / Accompanying Teacher Sachiko Takagi, English Teacher Ayuri Ueno and Health & Physical Education Teacher / International Exchange Coordinator / Accompanying Teacher Chitose Ueda.

Our Plumpton High School community are excited and honoured to welcome Takatsuki Kita High School students later in 2026. This will be a wonderful opportunity for our students and staff to share education, culture and develop new friends from Osaka and Japan. Our International Student Program Coordinator Ms. Ramos and I have commenced the process of selecting 20 students who will accompany us visiting Japan in 2027. These students will come from our Taiko drumming (Japanese drumming) program and the Student Executive Council Leadership team. We have 210 students that form part of this framework developing and implementing projects at a school, community, state, national and international level preparing them university and employment beyond university.

We gained much in beginning to understand school culture and education in Japan. It was a great opportunity for me to reflect upon what we can do differently in Australia and learn from your education in Japan to increase the success of our students.

We wish to thank Takatsuki Kita High School for their wonderful hospitality during our visit to the school. We were honoured to spend time together and greatly enjoyed the school tour. We will always remember this occasion as the first international sister school partnership Plumpton High School have developed.

Thank you also to Fumihito Matsumoto Business Development Manager, Austrade / Australian Consulate-General, Osaka and Satoko Hamanaka who accompanied us on our tour of Osaka where we visited 3 High schools and met with the Osaka Board of Education.

Once again thank for you warm welcome and we look forward to strengthening our connection between Takatsuki Kita High School, Plumpton High School, NSW and Australia.

Congratulations Manal – NSW Semi-Finalist 2026 NSW Plain English Speaking Award

Congratulations to Manal in Year 10 at Plumpton High School who was successful at the Western Sydney Regional Final of the NSW Plain English Speaking Award and has won a position in the NSW semi-final. Manal was one of 3 successful students selected to go through to the NSW semi-final round, which will be in mid-June. Manal, a student from MLC Burwood, and a student from Parramatta High School were selected. Manal is currently in Year 10 and the youngest student competing in the senior competition.

Manal and Sadia from Plumpton High School competed against students from MLC Burwood, Girraween Selective High School, Parramatta High School, Tara Anglican School, Winmalee High School, Model Farms High School, James Ruse Selective High School and The Kings School. It is also noteworthy that Plumpton was the only school with 2 students selected to compete at the Regional Final.

It was a tough round, and the adjudicators commended all of the competitors on their genuinely engaging topics and passionate speaking.

A big congratulations to Alice Dixon and Jazmine Mattews who lead the Plumpton High School Public Speaking and Debating HPGE program that has 55 students actively engaged each week throughout the year.
