Corporate Mentoring Program Update - Years 11 & 12

We’re excited to share an update from our Corporate Mentoring Program, with our Year 11 and Year 12 students recently meeting their Corporate Mentors!

Our Corporate Mentors play an important role in supporting and encouraging our students as they begin thinking about life beyond school. Through regular conversations and mentoring sessions, mentors share their professional experiences, provide advice and guidance, and help students develop a better understanding of the workplace and different career pathways.

The mentoring relationship gives students the opportunity to ask questions, build their confidence, develop professional communication skills and gain valuable insights into the skills and qualities that employers are looking for.

Most importantly, our Mentors provide a supportive adult connection — encouraging students to set goals, recognise their strengths and consider the possibilities available to them as they plan their future.

We are incredibly grateful to our Corporate Mentors for generously sharing their time, knowledge and experience with our students. Your support and encouragement are helping our young people feel more confident, informed and prepared for their next steps.

We look forward to seeing these partnerships continue to grow throughout the Program! A huge thank you to Gemma Avon and Michelle Dela Vega who make the magic happen three times each term for our mentees and mentors.

I am truly honoured to be recognised as a Fellow of the Teachers Guild of NSW (FTGN), joining a distinguished community of highly accomplished educational leaders. This recognition reflects a shared commitment to excellence, innovation, and dedication in education.

I am grateful for the support of my colleagues at Plumpton High School and farther afield, mentors, and the wider educational community who inspire me every day to strive for the best outcomes for our students. I look forward to continuing to contribute to the advancement of education and to collaborating with fellow educators in this esteemed community.

Congratulations to our HSC Dance students!

A huge congratulations to Layla and Talisha on completing their HSC Dance Practical Examinations on Monday, 10 August!

A special thank you also goes to HSC dancers Hannah and Franchesca for supporting our students throughout their performances and helping make the day a success.

We are incredibly proud of the hard work, commitment and dedication shown in preparing for this important HSC milestone.

Prefect 2027 Speeches Year 12 Student Executive Council (SEC) at Plumpton High School

Incredibly inspirational speeches were made by 54 Year 11 students seeking to become the Senior 2027 Year 12 Prefect and Senior Student Executive Council (SEC) Representatives at Plumpton High School. The students made their speeches to their Year 11 cohort and representatives from other years who assessed each speech.

All students undertook their professional public speaking training delivered by a combination of teachers and alumni who have previously undertaken the role of Prefect, School Vice-Captain or Captain prior to the Prefect Speech Day. The training sets our students up for not only success at school but for their careers beyond this place. Most of the students have undertaken this training on 3-5 separate occasions since commencing in Year 7.

Students made a 2-minute speech outlining their platform and how they will serve as a senior SEC representative over their time in Year 12. Throughout their tenure students lead the student body implementing projects that improve our school community, local, NSW, Australian and International communities as positively contributing global citizens. This is undertaken using a commercial project management structure (Gazelle) with students working in project teams of approximately 6-8 to develop and implement their projects and scopes of work.

On 5th of August, Plumpton High School student leaders had the incredible opportunity to attend the Global Impact Summit at the State Theatre, thanks to The Schools for Impact for this opportunity. The summit brought together inspiring philanthropists, changemakers and leaders who shared their experiences and explored the many ways young people can create positive change in society. Our student leaders had the opportunity to listen to a range of speakers, learn about philanthropy and discover how individuals and organisations can use their ideas, skills and resources to make a meaningful difference in the lives of others. The experience encouraged our students to think beyond themselves, understand their responsibility as future leaders and consider how they can contribute to building a more inclusive, compassionate and impactful world.

Literacy Bites Strategy @ Plumpton High School

📚 Every week, our staff get a Literacy Bite — and our students get the benefit at Plumpton High School.

Literacy Bites is a short newsletter that lands in every teacher's inbox at Plumpton High School. Each edition unpacks one element of grammar and hands teachers a practical strategy they can use in their very next lesson. Students benefit from easy-to-implement skills which have a big impact on their writing.

So far we've covered topics such as: precise action, saying and sensing verbs; building detailed noun groups with describers, classifiers and qualifiers; nominalisation to improve phrasing of complex concepts; using personal and possessive pronouns to make writing flow; combining clauses into compound and complex sentences; adding circumstances to answer when, where, why and how; and moving beyond bare assertions so students can acknowledge other perspectives in an argument.

Some examples of what that looks like for our students:

• A Science student writes “the colourful Southern corroboree frog with yellow and black stripes that lives in Kosciuszko National Park” instead of “the frog” — classification, description and habitat in a single phrase.

• A History student improves their vocabulary by swapping “said” for “claimed”, “conceded” or “announced”, and suddenly their source analysis has a point of view investigated historical perspectives.

• An English student learns to compact four clumsy clauses into one dense, controlled sentence. For example, "The novel was written by Suzanne Collins and it came out in 2008 and it is a dystopian story and it is really thrilling” turns into “Suzanne Collins' thrilling 2008 dystopian novel”. Students develop concise control of language, allowing them to craft sophisticated responses.

• A Geography student connects their ideas with conjunctive adverbs like “therefore”, “however” and “as a result”, so their extended response builds an argument instead of listing facts.

Writing isn't just an English skill. Our students write in every subject, every day, and when every teacher shares the same language for talking about writing, students hear a consistent message wherever they go. The small changes that students make to their writing add up to real improvements. We're proud that the initiative has been recognised by our Director, Educational Leadership and can’t wait see more progress from all out students.

Big thank you to the incredible Literacy team at Plumpton High School and specifically Ben Porritt who leads the team and this high leverage strategy that is supporting our teachers and in turn students.
