Our School Leadership and Administration team seemed to be missing today… replaced by a rather mysterious cast of characters calling themselves Snow White, the Handsome Prince, the Evil Queen and the Seven Dwarfs!

Thankfully, as the story unfolded, good triumphed, Snow White recovered from that very suspicious apple, and all was well once again in the Riva Kingdom!

We can’t wait to see the wonderful costumes and characters, and celebrate reading and imagination as our Pre-primary to Year 6 students take to the parade route.

What a beautiful day for our Interschool Cross Country on Friday! A fantastic team of 48 Riva students from Years 3–6 took on the challenge at Homestead Park, putting in an outstanding effort over the long-distance course. We were incredibly proud of the determination, resilience and sportsmanship shown by every student as they represented themselves and Riva with pride.

A very special congratulations to Aubrey, who delivered a phenomenal performance to be crowned Champion Girl for her year level – an outstanding achievement!

Thank you to Mr Batt and Miss Killick for the time and encouragement they put into preparing and supporting our runners, to Mrs Martin for leading the Riva cheer squad from the bay, and all parents and families who came along to support the team.

Yesterday, we were delighted to welcome two special guests to Riva Primary School: visiting scholar Bill Wilmot and Professor Dianne Chambers.

Bill is visiting from Boston, where he is a Universal Design for Learning (UDL) Implementation Specialist with CAST – the Center for Applied Special Technology, a global leader in inclusive education and the organisation behind the UDL framework. Professor Chambers is Director, International, in the School of Education at Edith Cowan University, and a highly regarded leader in inclusive education.

From our very beginning, Riva has embraced Universal Design for Learning as the framework for our approach to teaching and learning. UDL challenges us to intentionally design learning to remove barriers, create meaningful opportunities for every student to participate and succeed, and ultimately empower our students to become expert learners.

It was a privilege to spend time in conversation with Bill and Dianne – sharing Riva’s journey, reflecting on our practice and learning from their considerable expertise.

Most importantly, we were incredibly proud to welcome them into our classrooms to see UDL in action through the wonderful work of our students and staff. Seeing the principles we value reflected in everyday classroom practice was a wonderful opportunity to celebrate just how far our journey has taken us – while continuing to think about where we can go next.

Thank you, Bill and Dianne, for spending time with us, sharing your expertise and contributing to our journey as we continue to become a better school for every student, every day.

We are incredibly proud to share some wonderful news — Riva Primary School has been named the winning school in the 2026 Premier’s Reading Challenge for Western Australian schools with 600–1,000 students!

Today, Mr Chaplin and Cid had the honour of travelling to Parliament House to accept the award on behalf of our students from Premier Roger Cook and Minister for Education Sabine Winton.

The 2026 Challenge was a record-breaking one across WA, with almost 30,000 students reading and logging an extraordinary 494,700 books, and among schools of our size, Riva came out on top!

This achievement belongs to our students. Every book opened, every page turned and every story discovered contributed to this award. We are enormously proud of the enthusiasm our Riva Readers showed for the Challenge and, more importantly, for reading!

A huge thank you also goes to our families and staff who encouraged, celebrated and supported our readers throughout the Challenge.

Get ready for our Riva Book Week Parade!

We can’t wait to see our favourite characters leap from the pages and onto the parade route as we celebrate Riva Book Week on Friday 21st August!

Start planning those costumes and get ready to see who you can spot in our massive Book Week Parade, featuring our Pre-primary to Year 6 students from 8:50am.

Families and friends are warmly invited to come along, line the parade route and join in the fun!

Thank you for celebrating Riva Day with us today – 5 years of Respect, Inclusion and Achievement.

We began the day with a wonderful assembly led by two of our Year 2 classes, who took us on a journey through some special moments from Riva’s short history and reminded us just how much we have achieved together in five years – always built on our foundations of Respect, Inclusion and Achievement.

We were absolutely blessed with beautiful weather and, even more so, by the sight of our community pouring through the gates to join the celebrations. There was such a wonderful sense of joy across the school as families shared the music, the activities and the many special moments of the day.

We hope you enjoyed being alongside your children – stepping into their classrooms, sharing in their learning and seeing firsthand what they are working on and proud of. Thousands of House Tokens were earned across the day, with our students proudly completing their Riva Day challenges and redeeming their personalised gold medals.

A huge thank you to our String Orchestra, Year 6 IMSS students and Senior Choir for performing throughout our celebration sessions. It was a wonderful showcase of your talents and the perfect accompaniment to the atmosphere across the school.

A heartfelt thank you also to our amazing parent community for your incredible support of Staff Appreciation Day. Your kind words, thoughtful certificates and the beautiful afternoon tea mean so much to our staff and remind us just how fortunate we are to belong to such a generous and supportive community.

Five years ago, Riva was a new school with a vision for what we hoped to become. Today was a wonderful celebration of what we have built together – and, most importantly, of the students, staff and families who bring that vision to life – becoming a better school, for every student, every day.

Happy 5th Birthday, Riva! Here’s to a fabulous first five years, and the exciting journey to come.

We’re celebrating five incredible years of Respect, Inclusion and Achievement at Riva Primary School.

From our very first day to the vibrant community we are today, so many students, staff, families and friends have helped write the Riva story — and today, we celebrate YOU!

We can’t wait to welcome our families and community this afternoon for Riva Day, as we come together to celebrate our school, our people and this very special milestone.
