White-bellied Sea Eagles known as burad by the Butchulla ancestors, are coastal birds often seen soaring above the waters of The Fraser Coast. These eagles embody connection between land, sea, and sky. Their presence indicates healthy waterways and thriving ecosystems, where fish, birds, and tides move in balance.
These eagles typically form long-term pairs and often stay together for many years, sometimes for life. These two birds are likely a breeding pair or bonded couple.
Did you know they build massive nests (called eyries) high in the tall trees? These nests can be over 2 metres wide and are used and added to year after year, getting bigger over time!
Nesting high in ancient trees and returning to the same places year after year, the burad reminds us that this landscape has been lived in, cared for, and shared across generations by both people and wildlife.
