At First Tae Kwon Do, we teach and train in traditional martial arts, and we understand that strong technique begins with a strong foundation.
For every student to reach their maximum potential, we must continually develop the key building blocks of martial arts performance:
• Fitness & cardio
• Strength
• Flexibility
• Balance & coordination
That is why the first 15/20 minutes of every First TKD class are dedicated to focused warm-up and conditioning exercises designed to improve these important areas. By building the body correctly, students are able to perform Tae Kwon Do techniques with greater speed, sharper timing, stronger control, and more explosive power.
In this collage, you can see our Cockburn Adults Class working through plyometric training drills. These exercises develop explosive movement, agility, balance, and lower-body strength — all essential attributes for strong martial arts technique and long-term progression in Tae Kwon Do.
A strong martial artist is built from the ground up, and every warm-up is another step toward becoming stronger, faster, and more capable both physically and mentally.
First Tae Kwon Do WA - Building strong martial artists for life.

Photos from our First TKD Black Belt Quarterly Training Session in Thornlie on 02/05/2026 👊🔥 What an incredible day of training, intensity and personal growth.
FTKD Black Belts from across our First TKD branches came together with one shared goal — to challenge themselves, sharpen their skills and continue the journey towards excellence. The atmosphere inside the dojang was electric, with every Black Belt pushing hard, encouraging each other and refusing to settle for average.
These Quarterly Black Belt Sessions are about far more than just physical training. They are designed to expose our senior students to the higher standards, pressure and expectations required for future Dan gradings — whether that goal is in the near future or still many years away. Every session is another step forward in building the mindset, resilience and technical ability needed to progress through the Black Belt ranks.
One of the biggest benefits of these combined sessions is the opportunity for Black Belt students to train alongside members from other dojangs outside their regular weekly classes. It pushes everyone to lift their intensity, adapt to different training partners and honestly assess their own progress and areas for improvement.
Growth happens when we step outside our comfort zone — and that’s exactly what these sessions are all about.
A huge effort by everyone who attended. Keep showing up, keep working hard and keep striving to become better than you were yesterday. The journey to Black Belt excellence is built one training session at a time 💪🥋
Many thanks to our dedicated photographers: SI Les, SI Amie, SI Mischa & Ins Samantha

💐 Happy Mother’s Day from First TKD WA! 💐 Today we celebrate the incredible mothers across all our WA branches who continue to inspire us both on and off the dojang floor. Our 2026 Mother’s Day Collage is a tribute to the women who not only encourage their children through their TaeKwonDo journey, but who also have the courage and commitment to train alongside them. 🥋
There is something truly special about a mother who leads by example. ❤️ Through every class, every challenge, and every grading, these women show their children the value of perseverance, humility, discipline, and inner strength. 💪 They prove that growth never has an age limit and that true leadership comes through action.
Between work, family commitments, and the endless responsibilities of everyday life, our TKD mums still make time to better themselves physically and mentally. 🌟 That dedication deserves enormous respect. Their presence within our dojangs helps create the strong family culture that First TKD is proud of. 👏
To every mother in our First TKD family — thank you for your support, your kindness, your resilience, and the example you set for the next generation. 🌷 We are proud to have you as part of our community and grateful for everything you do.

An unforgettable day on the sand, filled with grit, focus, and relentless energy!
Our annual Black Belt & 1st Kup Beach Training returned to Coogee Beach on Sunday 12/04/2026 — and once again, it delivered a powerful test of both body and mind. This session is more than just training; it’s a proving ground where students step outside their comfort zones and rise to the challenge as they prepare for the journey to Black Belt.
From the first drill to the final push, the commitment shown by every participant was outstanding. The determination, discipline, and team spirit on display are exactly what defines the standard of First Tae Kwon Do in WA.
A big thank you to our dedicated instructor team — Jamus, Mia, Jack, Joshua, Tavish, Tiernan, and Michael — whose leadership, drive, and attention to detail kept the intensity high and the group focused throughout the entire session.
Senior leadership were also present, closely observing and evaluating those working toward their Black Belt. The level of effort and concentration from candidates made it clear — the future of our school is in strong hands.
Special appreciation to SI Marlyn, SI Mischa, Instructor Samantha, and Tamara for capturing the day so brilliantly. The moments they’ve documented reflect the true spirit of the event — resilience, unity, and hard work.
Make sure you check out the gallery — the images tell the story better than words ever could.

On 21 March 2026, Albany played host to the most recent Great Southern Belt Examination—an important event that brought together students and instructors, from First Tae Kwon Do for a day defined by progress and strong martial arts standards.
Led by WA Chief Instructor Dane Meade, the grading provided a platform for students to demonstrate their readiness for advancement. Throughout the examination, participants displayed a high level of preparation, with precise techniques, powerful kicking, and well-executed hyungs—both contemporary and traditional.
Students also showed excellent awareness and control in defensive timing, along with thoughtful strategy in both set and free sparring. These qualities are a clear reflection of the solid fundamentals developed through consistent training in our traditional system.
Well done to everyone who achieved their next rank. Your discipline, determination, and dedication continue to strengthen not only your own journey, but the wider First Tae Kwon Do community.

FIRST TKD (WA) Black Belt Dan Exam Highlights 🥋
Take a look through some moments captured from our recent Black Belt Dan Examination, conducted on Sunday 8th March 2026 under the direction of Master Instructor Vernon Low.
In First Tae Kwon Do (WA), progression to higher Dan ranks is not something that happens overnight. It is earned through years of consistent effort, resilience, and a commitment to refining both skill and character. Each promotion reflects not just technical ability, but perseverance, humility, and leadership within the Dojang.
Our students who graded have shown exceptional patience—dedicating no less than 8 years between Dan levels, and in many cases over a decade of continued growth. This is what true martial arts journey looks like.
We proudly recognise the following students on their advancement:
• Alisha (Woodvale) – Junior Black Belt to 1st Dan (Training since 2015)
• Tiernan (Brentwood) – 1st Dan to 2nd Dan (Training since 2006)
• Eliza (Bassendean) – 1st Dan to 2nd Dan (Training since 2009)
• Paul (Thornlie) – 1st Dan to 2nd Dan (Training since 2011)
• Salvatore (Yokine) – 2nd Dan to 3rd Dan (Training since 2003)
• Joshua (Duncraig) – 1st Dan to 2nd Dan (Training since 2008)
• Jack (Duncraig) – 1st Dan to 2nd Dan (Training since 2008)
Each of these martial artists has demonstrated what it means to stay the course—through challenges, setbacks, and years of disciplined training.
We’re incredibly proud of your achievements and the example you set for others coming through the ranks. Your journey continues, and so does your impact.
Well done to all—this is only the next chapter. 💪

📸 1st Quarter 2026 Grading Highlights | Part 4 of 4 📸On Sunday, 8 March, First Tae Kwon Do WA hosted its Fourth Quarterly Grading Exam for 2025, showcasing the efforts of our Senior Kup students ranging from 4th to 2nd Kup. This important grading brought together dedicated students from all 23 training centres, each stepping up to challenge themselves as they progress in their Taekwondo journey.
At this level, grading goes well beyond technique. Students were pushed through demanding rounds of free sparring against Black Belts—both individually and against multiple opponents—as well as structured one-step sparring. Throughout, Black Belts offered valuable, real-time feedback to help sharpen timing, precision, and tactical decision-making. These components tested not only skill, but also endurance, composure, and true fighting spirit.
As students move through the Blue Belt levels and higher, the standard continues to rise. Candidates were expected to confidently perform their current patterns, along with previous patterns, all to a high and consistent level. For those attempting 2nd Kup, board breaking formed a key part of the grading, requiring strong technique, accuracy, and decisive power.
At First Tae Kwon Do WA, advancement is earned through consistent effort and preparation. Students must complete a minimum of six months at each rank—often longer—before grading. This ensures every participant steps onto the mat physically prepared, mentally focused, and upholding the core principles of Taekwondo.
A big thank you to Senior Instructors Les, Amie, Mischa, along with Instructors Samantha for capturing the energy and standout moments from an exceptional day. 🥋
