πŸ₯‹ Great Southern Belt Examination – Albany

Albany was the setting for another successful First Tae Kwon Do WA Great Southern Belt Examination on 14 August 2026, with students travelling to take on the challenge of demonstrating their skills, knowledge and preparation.

Under the guidance of WA Chief Instructor Dane Meade, students were assessed across the various elements of our traditional Tae Kwon Do system. There were some excellent performances throughout the day, with strong kicking techniques, sharp hand techniques, well-performed hyungs and a clear understanding of both traditional and contemporary forms.

The examination also tested students’ ability to apply their skills with timing, control and defensive awareness, as well as their decision-making and strategy during both set and free sparring.

A grading examination is more than simply testing techniquesβ€”it is an opportunity for students to demonstrate the results of their ongoing training, discipline and commitment.

πŸ‘ Congratulations to everyone who successfully achieved their next rank!

Your hard work and determination are to be recognised and celebrated. Keep training, keep learning and keep progressing!

21/08/2026

Behind every one of our 22x WA Branches is a Great Team. Our WA 2ICs (Second Instructors) are the backbone of every First Tae Kwon Do WA training centre.

While the Branch Instructor provides leadership and direction, it is our dedicated 2ICs who help set the tone, uphold our standards, mentor students, support classes, and ensure every Dojang runs smoothly week after week.

What makes this team even more special is the depth of experience behind many of these instructors. Many of the people featured in these photographs have between two to three decades or more of continuous Tae Kwon Do training and experience within our school. Their knowledge, commitment and understanding of our traditional martial art have been developed through years of dedication, training and service.

The success and strength of a branch is never determined by one person alone. It is built by a team of committed instructors who lead by example, quietly working behind the scenes to create a positive, disciplined and welcoming training environment for every student.

To all of our current WA 2ICs – thank you. Your commitment, professionalism and countless volunteer hours do not go unnoticed. The time and energy you invest each week play a vital role in developing not only better martial artists, but better people.

This updated collage recognises our current team of WA Second Instructors, and we're excited to announce that it will be updated again before the end of the year with two more well-deserved 2IC promotions.

Congratulations and thank you for everything you do. We are proud to have you as part of the First Tae Kwon Do WA leadership team.

Decades of experience. One strong team. One proud tradition. πŸ₯‹

Thanks to SI Les for taking these photos and arranging this collage.

Black Belt Quarterly Training

Photos from our First TKD Black Belt Quarterly Training Session, held in Duncraig on 25/07/2026.

Black Belts from across our First TKD WA training centres came together for another demanding session focused on development, discipline and continual improvement.

From the moment training began, the energy in the dojang was outstanding. Everyone was challenged to work harder, maintain focus and raise the standard β€” while supporting and motivating the Black Belts training alongside them.

These quarterly sessions are an important part of the Black Belt journey. They provide our senior students with the opportunity to experience the intensity, expectations and discipline required as they progress towards future Dan gradings, whether that goal is approaching or still some years away.

Training with Black Belts from other dojangs also brings a valuable challenge. Different training partners, different strengths and different approaches force us to adapt, test ourselves and identify the areas where we can improve.

Progress comes from being willing to step beyond what is comfortable, embrace the challenge and keep working towards a higher standard.

A fantastic effort from everyone who attended. Keep training, keep challenging yourself and keep striving for improvement β€” every session is another step forward on the journey towards Black Belt excellence.

Many thanks to our dedicated photographers: SI Les, SI Amie, SI Mischa & Inst Samantha.

Success Is Never Achieved Alone. Some achievements are measured by belts. Others are measured by the people who stand beside you every step of the way.

Tiana began her Tae Kwon Do journey on 23 November 2015. Encouraged by her father, Instructor Ric, she and her younger brother Tayden took their first class at our Morley Dojang under the guidance of Area Senior Instructor Bruno.

Like many young people, Tiana's journey wasn't always easy. She balanced the challenges of school, the ups and downs of teenage life, and the commitment required to continue training week after week. There were moments when progress seemed slow, and even when her younger brother was selected to attempt his Junior Black Belt before her, she never lost sight of her own goals.

Instead of becoming discouraged, Tiana remained focused, continued to work hard, and trusted the process. On 14 June 2026, her perseverance was rewarded when she was awarded her 1st Dan Black Belt by Master Instructor Vernon Low.

But this story is about much more than earning a Black Belt. It is about the Luong family.

It is about a father who led by example as an instructor, a mother who quietly provided constant encouragement, support and guidance behind the scenes, and two siblings who motivated each other to become better people through martial arts.

The Black Belt around Tiana's waist represents thousands of hours of training, but it also represents years of family commitment, sacrifice and belief. Success like this is rarely achieved alone. It is built through parents who encourage, instructors who guide, and families who continue to support each other through every challenge.

At First Tae Kwon Do WA, we don't just develop strong martial artistsβ€”we help build strong families, resilient young people, and disciplined individuals who carry these values into every part of their lives.

Congratulations, Tiana, and congratulations to the entire Luong family. Your journey is a wonderful reminder that when a family supports one another, there are no limits to what can be achieved.

One family. One journey. One Black Belt earned through dedication, perseverance and unconditional support. πŸ₯‹πŸ’›

Combat & Conditioning – 3 July 2026 πŸ₯ŠπŸ’ͺBuilding stronger martial artists both physically and mentally.

Our latest Combat & Conditioning session brought together Black Belts from across First Tae Kwon Do Perth for an intense night of training under the guidance of 3rd Dan Instructors Mark and Sal.

The session focused on developing:
πŸ₯‹ Strength and functional conditioning
πŸ₯‹ Cardiovascular fitness and endurance
πŸ₯‹ Controlled contact training
πŸ₯‹ Practical self-defence and realistic combat skills
πŸ₯‹ Mental toughness, teamwork and resilience

From pad work and kicking drills to grappling, conditioning circuits and controlled sparring, every exercise was designed to challenge our Black Belts and help sharpen the skills needed in realistic self-defence situations.

A huge thank you to Instructors Mark and Sal for once again delivering a high-energy, well-structured session that continues to raise the standard of our Black Belt training.

Combat & Conditioning is open to all First Tae Kwon Do WA Black Belts, providing another opportunity to improve fitness, refine technique and push beyond your comfort zone.

Train harder. Train smarter. Stay ready.

Honouring Achievement: First Tae Kwon Do WA Black Belt Promotions.

First Tae Kwon Do WA is proud to recognise the outstanding achievements from our Black Belt Examinations held on Sunday, 19 July 2026. The examination day was a true reflection of commitment, perseverance, mental strength, and unwavering determination as students reached one of the most significant milestones in their Tae Kwon Do journey.

For every candidate, this achievement represents many years of consistent training, dedication, and personal sacrifice. Several students have trained for well over a decade to reach this point. At First Tae Kwon Do WA, Black Belt promotions are never rushed or simply awarded for time served. Every promotion is earned through continuous commitment, regular training, and the successful demonstration of the high technical, physical, and mental standards expected of a First Tae Kwon Do Black Belt.

Every successful candidate has demonstrated not only the required techniques but also the character, attitude, and maturity expected of a Black Belt.

Under the experienced assessment of Master Vernon Low, every Black Belt examination is conducted to the highest standards, ensuring each promotion is earned through merit, dedication, and excellence. These promotions are a testament to the countless hours of training, the support of instructors and families, and the determination of each student to never give up.

2nd Quarter 2026 Grading Highlights | Part 4 of 4

Our Second Quarterly Grading Examination for 2026, held on Sunday 14 June, featured our senior Coloured Belt students from 4th to 2nd Kup. Students from all 23 First Tae Kwon Do WA Training Centres came together to demonstrate the hard work, commitment, and perseverance required to continue their journey towards Black Belt.

At this stage, grading is about much more than performing techniques. Candidates faced challenging rounds of free sparring against experienced Black Belts, including multiple-opponent sparring, as well as one-step sparring drills. Throughout the examination, our Black Belts provided constructive coaching and feedback, helping students refine their timing, control, distance, and decision-making under pressure. These demanding assessments tested not only technical ability, but also resilience, determination, and character.

As students advance through the senior belt ranks, expectations increase significantly. Each candidate was required to demonstrate a high standard in both their current and previously learned patterns, reflecting consistency and a thorough understanding of the syllabus. Students grading for 2nd Kup also completed board breaking, demonstrating accuracy, commitment, and effective power generation.

At First Tae Kwon Do WA, every promotion is earned through dedicationβ€”not simply time served. Students must complete a minimum of six months at each rank, and often longer, ensuring they are physically capable, mentally prepared, and ready to meet the standard expected at the next level.

Congratulations to every student who took on the challenge.

A special thank you to Senior Instructors Les, Amie and Mischa, together with Instructors Samantha and Tamara, for capturing the memorable moments from another outstanding grading examination.
