Toastmasters International does not prohibit any speech topics, including those related to s*x, politics, or religion. This is a common misconception among members. In fact, Toastmasters encourages a variety of speech topics to enrich meetings and stimulate thought and discussion.

However, speakers are advised to be mindful of the diverse backgrounds of their audience. Toastmasters recommends using good taste and sensitivity when selecting speech topics, content, and language.

Maree has always loved to talk—but she wanted her conversations to go deeper than the usual small talk about movies, weather, or work. That curiosity led her to Toastmasters, where she found a space to explore more meaningful topics and sharpen her communication skills at the same time.

Since joining St Georges Toastmasters, Maree has become known for her wit, warmth, and willingness to take on new challenges—both behind the lectern and beyond it.

In the 2025-2026 Toastmaster year, she takes on the role of Program Quality Director for Toastmasters District 17 (that's 2nd top Poobah for Western Australia).

❓ Is there a strict attendance policy?
🗓️ Nope—but like a sports team, you can’t expect to thrive if you skip practice.

We grow by doing—delivering speeches, taking on roles, and engaging with the club.

Many people find they learn just as much—if not more—from observing other speakers and listening to their evaluations as they do from being evaluated themselves. Every meeting and role (including audience member) is an opportunity to learn something new.

You don’t need to be perfect—just show up regularly and you’ll improve, guaranteed.

❓ Is Toastmasters only for public speakers?
📣 Not at all! While public speaking is a big part of what we do, Toastmasters also helps you grow your confidence in everyday conversations, meetings, advocacy, and leadership. It’s communication training for real life—not just the stage.

When Phillippa of The Sharing Shed, first joined Toastmasters after moving to Perth, when she was finding it tricky to break into the local business scene. She was on the lookout for like-minded professionals and saw Toastmasters as a way to start building her network.

The second time around, it was about more than business—it was about connection. She returned to Toastmasters to extend her network and be part of a community. What she found at St Georges was a tribe: a group of supportive, boundary-pushing people who challenge each other to grow and always have each other’s backs.
