I’d like to remind myself that lack of sleep isn’t normal with older kids. Yet, 4 out of 5 of the past nights I’ve been woken by alarms.

No, not alarm clock, alarms from Isaac’s diabetes tech. High, low, low, high, high, high, not reading, CGM expired, no insulin in reservoir.

No wonder Isaac is done, no wonder I can’t do much else.
F**k diabetes. Is it diabetes week? Here, it’s every f**king day and night.

Almost 12 years in and our first true case of DKA for Isaac. For those of you non T1 families it’s a life threatening circumstance ‘Diabetic Ketoacidosis’ which is caused from lack of insulin.

We can usually deal with high BG’s and high Ketones at home but throw in vomiting and that’s a call to 000 (paramedics for those OS)

In the end we were in and out within a few hours. I now feel I pulled the trigger too early but for me vomiting with ketones is life or death and in hindsight and positive results, yes, I called too early but another half an hour could’ve gone the other way.

A simple line change, which we do every two to theee days, caused this. Always on call. Type 1 Diabetes doesn’t sleep.

When T1 went to school - Health & Wellbeing 12/01/2022

A T1 mum, who purchased a book for her little one starting school, reminded me about my article I usually share at this time of year too.

Thankfully I am past this stage but it's always a time of our life as a family which will never be forgotten. I continue to be grateful for Isaac's teachers and carers but it doesn't always take away the worry.

When T1 went to school - Health & Wellbeing A child's first day at school can be a nerve-wracking experience for any parent. But for Amanda Lenehan, whose son has type 1 diabetes, the amount of preparation and anxiety was at a completely different level.

Whether going away for a night or a week (this time it’s school camp for the young fella). I always put ‘insulin’ at the front door as it’s the last thing I pack and the one thing we can’t live without.
