⛵ MEET THE COACHES — LAWSON MCAULLAY

Our Youth Sail Coach Series continues with Lawson McAullay from Royal Perth Yacht Club!

Lawson started sailing at just 5 years old, following in the footsteps of his older brothers. What began as weekend sailing in an Optimist on the Swan River quickly grew into a passion for racing, learning new skills and spending time on the water with friends. ⛵

🏆 Biggest sailing achievement: Finishing 25th overall at the ILCA 7 World Championships in Qingdao, China

💭 Sail with: Tom Slingsby — Lawson would love to learn from his ability to adapt across different boats and his racing mindset.

⛵ Favourite class: ILCA 7

🚴 Outside of sailing: Cycling, snorkelling and spending time outdoors.

⭐ One word for Youth Sail: Opportunity

👋 MEET THE COACHES — ETHAN MCAULLAY ⛵

Next up in our Youth Sail Coach Series is Ethan McAullay from Royal Perth Yacht Club!

Ethan's sailing journey started with something that will be familiar to many young sailors — sailing with his family and dad. ⛵

Since then, his journey has taken him to an incredible milestone: qualifying for the Australian Sailing Team. 🇦🇺

His favourite class is the ILCA, and when asked who he'd most like to sail with, Ethan didn't hesitate:

❤️ His family — because sailing has always been something they've done together and the reason he wanted to sail in the first place.

Outside of sailing, Ethan enjoys football, proving there’s plenty of room for other sports and interests alongside sailing. ⚽

And his one word to describe Youth Sail?

🤝 SOCIALISE

Because Youth Sail isn't just about what happens on the water. It's about meeting other young sailors, making friends, sharing experiences and being part of the sailing community.

👋 MEET THE COACHES — ZAC LITTLEWOOD ⛵

Our Youth Sail Coach Series continues with Zac Littlewood from Royal Freshwater Bay Yacht Club!

Zac first got into sailing through a learn-to-sail course, and has since gone on to become a WA Youth Sail 4.7 & Radial Champion. 🏆

His favourite boat is the Switch, and when he’s not sailing, you’ll find Zac cycling or foiling — so it’s safe to say he likes keeping moving! 🌊🚴

When asked who he’d most like to sail with, Zac chose someone a little closer to home:

❤️ His sister.

And his one word to describe Youth Sail?

⭐ SPECIAL

👋 MEET THE COACHES — MATTHEW JERWOOD ⛵

Next up in our Youth Sail Coach Series is Matthew Jerwood from WAIS!

Matthew was encouraged into sailing by his parents and quickly found himself having plenty of fun at Shelley Sailing Club, racing a Mudlark with his friends.

His sailing career has taken him a long way since then, including a 3rd-place finish at the World Match Racing Tour World Championship in 2016. 🏆

But perhaps one of Matthew's biggest achievements has come through coaching — supporting the WAIS sailing program and helping sailors reach the highest levels of the sport, including representing Australia at the Paris 2024 Olympics. 🇦🇺⛵

When asked who he'd like to sail with, Matthew didn't choose a famous sailor — he chose his old Redline Racing teammates: Pat, Niall, Alex, Mark, Adam and Luke.

His favourite boats?

🌊 M32 or Moth

Outside of sailing, Matthew enjoys cycling, spending time with his partner Kate, their dogs Charlie and Leo, and catching up with friends.

And his one word to describe Youth Sail?

⭐ OPPORTUNITY

👋 MEET THE COACHES — ELEANOR GREEN ⛵

Our Youth Sail Coach Series continues with Eleanor Green from Fremantle Sailing Club / Royal Freshwater Bay Yacht Club!

Eleanor’s sailing journey started incredibly early — at just four years old, when her dad built her a boat for her birthday. Growing up around sailing, it’s fair to say it’s been a pretty big part of her life ever since! ⛵

When asked about her biggest achievement in sailing, Eleanor didn't choose a trophy or a result. Instead, she chose something that says a lot about the coach she has become:

💙 “Getting to coach the next generation of sailors.”

And when asked who she would most like to sail with, Eleanor had a great answer:

“I do not have any one specific person in mind. I think every sailor has their own experiences, stories, and can teach you something incredibly valuable.”

That's a pretty great philosophy to bring to Youth Sail — everyone has something to learn, and everyone has something to share.

Outside of sailing, Eleanor enjoys arts and crafts, and when it comes to her favourite class, she'll happily sail anything with a skiff! 😎

Her one word to describe Youth Sail?

👋 MEET THE COACHES — MICHAEL COMPTON ⛵

Our Youth Sail Coach Series continues with Michael Compton from South of Perth Yacht Club / Fremantle Sailing Club!

Michael was introduced to sailing thanks to his dad, who purchased a boat at SoPYC and enrolled him in a sailing course. The expectation was simple — Michael needed to learn to sail so he could turn the boat around if his dad fell off! 😂

Safe to say, he’s become almost capable now...

Michael’s sailing journey has taken him around the world, including a 2nd-place finish at the 4.7 Worlds in Poland and winning the U16 category — a major milestone in his sailing journey. 🌏🏆

His favourite class is definitely the ILCA, and when asked who he’d sail against if he could choose anyone, his answer was simple:

⛵ “Any of my coaches when they were my age would be a fun challenge.”

Clearly, the competitive spirit is still alive!

When he’s not sailing, Michael is studying Automation and Robotics at UWA 🤖 — so there’s plenty going on both on and off the water.

His one word to describe Youth Sail?

⭐ OPPORTUNITY

👋 MEET THE COACHES — JEMIMA CAREY ⛵

Continuing our Youth Sail Coach Series, we’re introducing Jemima Carey from South Brisbane Sailing Club!

Jemima’s sailing journey began in a Heron with her dad when she was just 8 years old. At 13, she bought an old Heron of her own and spent a year fixing it up — and still sails it whenever she can! ⛵

Her sailing journey has included 10 consecutive years competing at the Heron Nationals, including winning the Junior National Championships, as well as taking on the challenge of competing in the 505 Nationals alongside some incredible sailors.

When asked what class she loves most, Jemima chose the Heron for the nostalgia — but admits the 505 is an incredibly fun boat to sail!

Outside of sailing, Jemima plays guitar, writes music and is studying to become a primary teacher — so she brings plenty of experience both on and off the water. 🎸📚

Her one-word description of Youth Sail?

✨ JOYFUL

And we're looking forward to bringing plenty of that joy to the water at Youth Sail!
