Following on from Scams Awareness Week, we wanted to share a few of our own tips.

Five simple habits worth building into your routine: slow down, verify independently, don't click unexpected links, protect your accounts and talk about it if it happens to you.

Scams work because they're designed to catch people off guard. Last year, they cost Australians more than $2 billion.

If Scams Awareness Week made you think about your own cyber habits, our Cyber Security Essentials course is a good next step. It's not just for people working in cyber. It's built for everyday Australians who want to stay safer online, as well as businesses and teams wanting to build that awareness across their workforce. Fully online and self-paced, covering 14 modules from phishing and malware identification to cyber hygiene and incident response. Absolutely no technical experience needed.

"To save $20,000 takes a lot of time. It's a shocking feeling when your hard-earned money has gone." — Mannu

Mannu was building a granny flat and had arranged a $20,000 deposit with his builder. The payment link he received looked legitimate. It wasn't. By the time he realised, the money was gone.

Payment redirection scams cost Australians $166.8 million last year, and Mannu's story shows exactly how they work.

As Scams Awareness Week 2026 comes to a close, we want to say thank you to everyone who engaged with this week's stories or had a conversation because of them, awareness like this is one of the most effective tools we have against fraud. We'll keep talking about it beyond this week too.

"Mum, my phone's broken." That's how it started for Susanne. What followed was message after message, each claiming to be from her daughter, a broken phone, a frozen bank account, an urgent need for money.

By the time Susanne called to check, nearly $26,000 had already been transferred.

"Unless you're 100% sure who it's coming from, don't engage."

It's easy to feel powerless against scammers, especially when their tactics are built to make you panic. But three simple steps can put the control back in your hands. STOP before you act on an urgent request. CHECK by using contact details you've found yourself, never ones supplied in the message. PROTECT yourself and others by reporting it, to the real organisation, to Scamwatch, and to your bank if money's involved.

Behind every scam report is a real person and a real story. No one’s just a number.

Last year, 274,577 Australians were scammed. Not because they weren't paying attention — because scams today are built to look exactly right.

Lindy's started with a text she almost ignored, a notification about a laptop purchase she hadn't made. Worried, she called the number in the message. The person on the line said they were from PayPal and needed to close her account to stop the transaction. Minutes later, a one-time code arrived by text. Believing the call was genuine, Lindy shared it.

"They rush you through it and make you panic. As soon as I hung up the phone, I just knew. My heart sank."

Lindy had money stolen and was left in debt, proof that it could happen to anyone, and that scammers don't need much time to do real damage.

This Scams Awareness Week, Comtech is proud to support the National Anti-Scam Centre's campaign because everyone deserves to know how to protect themselves.

STOP before you click a link or share a code. CHECK who you're really talking to. PROTECT yourself and others by reporting it to Scamwatch.
