School is designed for extroverts. It is loud and busy and dictated to by bells and buzzers and the urgency of getting through lessons and assessments.

Even recess and lunch are full-on. There are co-curricular and meetings to attend, not to mention friendship groups and dramas to negotiate, plus the demands of class groups and dynamics. It is utterly exhausting and depleting for introverts.

Sounds fair ❤️

It’s funny, but the idea captures something real about why David Attenborough’s work has mattered for generations.

For more than 70 years, he has taken viewers into rainforests, oceans, deserts, polar regions and countless other habitats, showing animals and behaviors that most people would otherwise never witness. His career helped transform the nature documentary into one of television’s most powerful forms of storytelling.

But the documentaries were never simply about showing beautiful animals. Attenborough has repeatedly argued that people are more likely to protect nature once they understand it and experience a sense of wonder about it.

That may be his greatest contribution. Millions of people have watched a tiny insect, an unfamiliar deep-sea creature or an ordinary forest suddenly become extraordinary because his voice encouraged them to look a little closer.

Maybe that Year 6 child accidentally understood the entire philosophy of an Attenborough documentary: the planet was already incredible. Someone just needed to make us notice.

You may have heard of ‘the million-word gap’. It is the idea that if you read five picture books a day to a young child, they will enter kindergarten with exposure to about 1.4 million more words than kids who were never read to.

Let’s extrapolate that out. What if you keep reading to kids for years after kindergarten? What if they read a book a fortnight themselves in primary school? A novel a month in high school?

It won’t just be words they learn. They will develop comprehension skills, internalise grammar, learn new facts, and explore new ideas. They will visit other worlds in their imaginations and learn that other people live different lives but may feel the same way they do. All that reading will help your child build a better brain and a warmer heart.

Unfortunately, the 2023 Progress In International Reading Literacy Report (PIRLS) shows there is a significant and ongoing decline in recreational reading and reading achievement among Australian school-aged children. It is also born out in two decades of NAPLAN data that our boys are consistently achieving lower reading results than our girls.

We NEED our boys to read. Not only for academic progression, but for the emotional learning and sense of wellbeing it offers. There are very few silver bullets in education, but reading is one of them.
