Thornlie Senior High School Instrumental Music Program offers free instrumental tuition to successful applicants from years 7-12. Students who have already commenced learning an instrument through IMSS in primary school are able to continue their instrument in secondary school, b

ut need to inform TSHS of their wish to continue by completing a music application form when enrolling. Students who are accepted into the program will receive free, ongoing instrumental tuition for the duration of Secondary School, provided they elect instrumental music as one of their option subjects. We work in conjunction with Instrumental Music School Services - IMSS (formerly known as SIM). TSHS currently offer a large range of instruments for study, including:

Flute
Clarinet
Saxophone
Trumpet

Percussion
Contemporary Voice

Students involved in the program will receive free, weekly instrumental tuition from a specialist teacher in a small group. Students will also be placed in small, specialised intensive music classes as one of their timetabled subjects, which will be with the classroom music specialist. In the music classroom subject, students will study Aural, Theory, Composition, Music History and Performance. In Senior School, students may continue their free tuition by electing to study General Music in Year 11/12 or by electing to participate in the PIMS endorsed program. Students are expected to participate in one rehearsal per week with their peers and a specialist teacher either before or after school for one hour as part of their instrumental training. We currently offer 4 compulsory large ensembles:

Junior Classical Guitar Ensemble
Senior Classical Guitar Ensemble
Choir
Concert Band

Students have access to many performance opportunities, including 2-3 music concerts per year at school in the Performing Arts Centre, as well as opportunities to compete at state wide music festivals, as well as playing at many school events and local community events.
