🎭 6 Voices: Bringing Research to the Stage

What happens when teachers are asked to teach outside their area of specialisation?

6 Voices is an original ethnodrama developed through Arts-Based Educational Research and Research-Based Theatre as part of Tayla Fordham’s Master of Philosophy (Education) research at Curtin University.

The research explores the lived experiences of six Western Australian educators teaching secondary Drama outside their major area of specialisation. Drawing on more than 18 hours of interviews, Tayla’s research culminated in a 260-page ethnodrama, 6 Voices, which forms the creative component and Non-Traditional Research Output (NTRO) of the study.

On 15 August 2026, selected moments from the larger work were brought to the stage in a developmental performance, transforming research findings from interview, to analysis, to page, and finally to performance. 🎭

The performance gave audiences the opportunity to connect with the educators’ experiences and share reflections that will help shape the future development of the work.

👏 A huge thank you to Tayla’s supervisors, Carol Carter and Lisa Paris, the six educators who generously shared their experiences, the actors who brought their voices to life on stage, and everyone who attended and contributed to this important research journey.

📣 Indigenous Literacy Day – Wednesday 2 September | Last Chance to Register!

Join us in celebrating Indigenous Literacy Day (ILD) with special guest Vincent McKenzie, Bardi language and culture teacher from Christ the King Catholic School, Djarindjin/Lombadina.

Indigenous Literacy Day is a national celebration of First Nations peoples’ stories, cultures and languages, created by the Indigenous Literacy Foundation (ILF). Each year, the ILF presents a special film and livestream from the Sydney Opera House, celebrating First Nations stories, cultures, languages and remote Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities.

📚 This year’s theme is Country is Our Teacher and will be showcased in the ILD film and livestream, available to watch on 2 September.

To mark the occasion, we are delighted to host Vincent McKenzie, who will share his new book, Galaloon Jawal, and his knowledge of Bardi language and culture.

This week is Australian Education Assistant Appreciation Week, and Schools everywhere would be lost without them! Education Assistants play such an important role in our schools. Not only are they working one-on-one with students, but they are also helping teachers behind the scenes to make sure each student has the support they need to learn. Thank you for all that you do to help educate students. It does take a village to raise a child!

The program features Professor Rekha Koul from Curtin University’s School of Education, who will explore research into classroom learning environments in her lecture, “Researching Classroom Learning Environments: Theory, Instruments and Evaluation.”
