Pregnant? Or know someone who is?
At Edith Cowan University (ECU), all midwifery students take part in our Mothers Adopting Midwifery Students (M**S) program — a unique opportunity to connect classroom learning with real-life experience.
Through M**S, expectant mothers are partnered with midwifery students who provide support throughout pregnancy, during birth, and into the early postnatal period, under the supervision of a trained maternity healthcare provider.
This program is free to participate in. If you’d like to learn more, visit: https://www.ecu.edu.au/schools/nursing-and-midwifery/engagement-activity/mothers-adopting-midwifery-students-mams-program

This National Palliative Care Week, we’re getting to the heart of it.🧡 Big Questions. Real Answers.
Every day in Australia, more than 450 people die from a life-limiting illness — and every one of them could benefit from compassionate, person-centred palliative care.
This year’s theme encourages open conversations about palliative care, helping make care easier to understand through honest questions and real, human answers. It’s about supporting people to live well, their way, recognising that conversation changes everything, and ensuring care feels personal, safe and respectful for individuals and families.
Our researchers are contributing to this important conversation through new research exploring the nurse’s role in transitions to palliative care for people with advanced cancer. The study introduces a new mid-range nursing theory, Orchestrating Transitions, highlighting both the visible and often unseen work nurses perform — as advocates, communicators, hope instillers, protectors of cultural obligations, and emotional supports for patients and families.
This research helps make the invisible visible, shining a light on the compassionate and often under-recognised role nurses play at the heart of palliative care.

ECU students are helping tackle one of Australia’s most common chronic childhood conditions — early childhood tooth decay. 🦷✨
Nearly half of Australian preschool-aged children experience tooth decay, but two final-year Edith Cowan University (ECU) students are working to change that through education and community engagement.
Louise Miller and Caitlin Goddard, who are both studying a Bachelor of Health Science majoring in Nutrition Bioscience at Edith Cowan University (ECU), recently hosted an oral health workshop for migrant mothers at Stirling Leisure Centre in partnership with ISHAR Multicultural Women’s Health Services.
Supported by supervisors Dr Lesley Andrew (ECU’s School of Nursing and Midwifery) and Dr Ruth Wallace, the workshop provided practical, hands-on advice to help parents support healthy teeth and prevent early childhood tooth decay.
Families also received helpful resources including the children’s book Little Aussie Bugs, toothbrushes and toothpaste, with plenty of opportunity to ask questions in a relaxed and welcoming environment.
Well done Louise and Caitlin on making a meaningful impact in the community through health education and prevention. 💙
