Most of us assume our daughters are using AI for homework. A summary of a chapter. A maths problem explained a different way.

New research from the eSafety Commissioner suggests we may be asking about the wrong thing. Of the Australian children surveyed who have used AI, 54% have used it for personal or social reasons. They are asking it about friendships, about their health, and about how they feel.

In her latest blog, Principal Jennifer Oaten looks at why AI can feel like an easier place to ask a hard question, what it cannot do, and the practical things families can do so that it is not the easiest place for their daughter to turn.

Science Week at Santa Maria has been full of experiments, challenges and plenty of hands-on learning 🧪👩‍🔬🔭🌱

This year’s theme, Seeds of Science: Nurturing Knowledge for All, came to life through activities across the College. Students launched rockets, built hot ice towers and created compostable seed paper, exploring science by testing ideas and seeing what happened next!

Our hearts are full after Year 6 Grandparents Day ❤️

Grandparents Day is a special opportunity for our Year 6 students to welcome their grandparents and grandfriends into the College and share their Santa Maria journey with them.

The morning began with a visit to the classrooms, where guests explored the girls’ hard work and learning from throughout the year, before coming together in the Cultural Centre for a beautiful Liturgy and morning tea.

It was a meaningful morning filled with reflection and connection, giving our girls the opportunity to celebrate the special memories they share with their grandparents and grandfriends, while creating some new ones together.

The Years 5 & 6 classrooms came to life for Open Night! ✨📝

Families were welcomed into the College to explore the classrooms last night and see students’ work from throughout the year and hear firsthand about their learning. There was plenty of pride in the room as students shared their work and reflected on how far they have come, not only in their learning, but in their confidence and independence too.

Last night we held our final Men of Santa for 2026, and what a way to finish the year.

We were lucky to have Dr Andrew Leech with us: GP, author of Calm Kids, Happy Hearts and Inside the Teenage Mind and a Santa Maria dad himself.

Andrew spoke about why connecting with your daughter gets harder as she grows into a teenager, and what you can actually do about it. Andrew touched on mental health in dads and daughters with the same honesty, no glossing over the hard parts.

Farewell to our Year 12 dads. Men of Santa runs Terms 1 to 3, and it is genuinely one of my favourite events on the calendar. If you are one of the dads who has shown up year after year and is now sending your daughter off into the world, thank you. I will miss your faces around the room next year, and I will miss our conversations even more.

To the new dads who braved what can only be described as shocking weather for your very first Men of Santa, thank you. I do hope to see you again next year, ideally under a drier sky.

Alumni Spotlight 📣

What can one work placement lead to? For 2022 graduate Amy, it was the first step towards owning her own dog grooming business.

Amy’s story is a wonderful example of how hands-on experience can help shape what comes next. From discovering the industry through work placement to building a business of her own, she has turned an early opportunity into a career she can call her own.

From Santa Maria to biomedical engineering, alumni Maria-Jose Soto (Class of 2015) returned to the College to share where her career has taken her.

After Santa Maria, Maria-Jose studied Neuroscience and Physiology at The University of Western Australia before completing postgraduate studies in engineering. Her career has since taken her from a Biomedical Engineer role at Sir Charles Gairdner Hospital to medical technology start-up Earflo, where she is now Chief Operating Officer.

Along the way, Maria-Jose has published research, attended conferences in the United States and contributed to submissions to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration.

Thank you, Maria-Jose, for returning to Santa Maria and giving our girls a real insight into where biomedical engineering can take you.
