弟子が準備できたとき、師が現れる
"When the student is ready, the teacher will appear."
A true teacher doesn't simply pass on techniques—they pass on values. Skill can be taught, but integrity, humility, consistency, and discipline are demonstrated through everyday actions.
These are the qualities that preserve traditions across generations.
Likewise, a student's responsibility extends beyond showing up to train. We must learn to observe, question, and develop the discernment to recognise not only technical excellence, but also character.
The relationship between teacher and student is built on mutual trust and respect—a gentleman's pact. It should never become a pedestal where ego replaces learning or loyalty blinds us to conduct that contradicts the very principles we seek to embody.
Nagato Sensei often reminds us: "Be a gentleman." To me, those words capture far more than etiquette—they speak of honour, accountability, and the responsibility we all carry, whether we teach or learn.
When choosing who to follow, look beyond the dojo floor. Observe how they treat others, how they respond to criticism, the type of relationships they have, how they lead their family, their students, and themselves.
Your instincts are often your best teacher.
